This may not be what you've asked for, but I found it very helpful in my study of the Old Testament. Bruce Fieler's book and dvd "Walking the Bible. He seeks to find the places of the Bible in modern day lands. His writing opens my mind to what it may have been like to wander in the desert 40 years, live as slaves in Egypt, and so on. It's well worth reading. The dvd shows you the places. It's like making a new connection to the scriptures to see the physical property on which Abraham walked. Consider watching it. Your local library should be able to get both of these for you. If not Amazon has them.

There's a book called Survey of the Old Testament by Paul N. Benware. It's easy reading with lots of photos of the places it discusses.

J Vernon McGee's 5-year Through the Bible radio program is available at http://www.thruthebible.org/. He was a profound bible scholar and interesting preacher because he discussed obscure historical information you don't usually hear elsewhere. However, his theology is pretty bland mainstream Christian seminary grist and I think he tended to dodge anything controversial. Still, it might be what you're looking for.

final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, as quickly as I launched into an attempt to verify the full Bible, I won 2 English translations: a favorite Protestant one incorporating the finished set of extra products we Protestants call "the Apocrypha," maximum of that are seen "deuterocanonical via the Catholic or Orthodox church homes or the two; and the Jewish classes Society's translation of the Tanakh. each and every of the books secure interior the Tanakh, I examine from that version. I quite propose it. The JPS notes on the translations are dazzling, and that they accomplish some issues that different translators do no longer. (E.g., in Judges 10:4, they controlled to reproduce a Hebrew pun, and further a word explaining it. i've got no longer considered that pun known in the different English version.) the main important clarification for who prefer the JPS translation is that it avoids specific biases in the direction of interpretations Christians drew, no longer from the Hebrew, yet from the Greek translation (the Septuagint) used via each and every of the hot testomony writers. In that experience, it is form of extra genuine. i could additionally propose "Whose Bible Is It?" via Jaroslav Pelikan as a source on the variations interior the texts and translations, and how they have been on condition that way. As to "God's genuine call interior the text textile," the JPS translators observed the commonplace prepare of representing the call (YHWH) with Lord or God (in keeping with the way it may often be examine in Hebrew, which relies upon slightly on context), yet utilising an all-capitals version (with letters after the preliminary one in a smaller font) to sign that they are translating the call. in case you get the section-via-section English and Hebrew (which grew to become into the coolest fee replica i'd desire to locate), you could easily come to renowned the call in Hebrew once you come across a style of renditions interior the English. the familiar rendition of the call in English variations as "Jehovah" has in uncomplicated terms a distant courting to the unique, besides. The vowels are drawn from the be conscious (Adonai or Elohim) surely examine, and not from the call itself, because of the fact vowel-marks have been further many centuries later. The consonants are English mispronunciations of the German. ("Yehowa" could be closer, even nonetheless preserving the irrelevant vowels.)
