10% or less if the service sucked, nothing if it was absolutely horrible. 15% for standard service 20% if it was great. A penny with the tip means you loved the service. Do not blame the water or waitress for food that sucks, your tipping for the good service no matter how the food was.

20% is the general average. If the meal is truly awful, it is not the fault of the server. If a server is pleasant (and I don't mean obnoxious like in Bennigans), conversive like an adult, attentive and keeps the coffee coming, well lets just say I've left $20 tips for $30 meals in the past. On the other hand, if the server is rude, rushy, uncaring or just plain pissy, well then obviously the tip should reflect your dissatisfaction.
Waitering/Waitressing, retail sales and prostitution are all basically the same game, you generally pay more when it is sold better to you.

20 percent on the total food/drink bill, but only 15 percent on a bill that has the tax added in. If the service is excellent, go to 20 percent on the the food/drink without the tax, and 15 percent with the tax on it. But be careful, if the waiter/waitress is really good looking, you'll be tempted to go a lot higher! At the same time, make sure that the busboy gets his share too.

15% is the standard. If the service is mediocre, 10%. Great service should get 25%.
