How often are you supposed to have updates for your computer??? I have Windows XP home edition and every time I am on the computer the Windows Updater comes up. Sometimes when i don't even install something, i go to turn off the computer it says "turn off to download updates" or whatever.

i went to the security thing and i turned off automatic updates because i know there cannot be this many, and Windows has a freaking fit and this red shield appears on the task bar and the only way to get rid of it is to turn automatic updates back on.... but since my computer is a whacko the yellow shield comes back.

I know there are no viruses on my computer so don't even suggest it. i am just wondering if there is a way i can stop it, and if there are even this many updates

you might be running SP1... upgrade to SP2 from Microsoft that's free... and keep the automatic update on... don't switch it off... there are new security threats creeping up everyday.... windows tries to fix the new vulnerabilities via these updates... so currently if you don't have any virus... it will not be staying that way without automatic updates doing its job... to secure your machine further in future.

If I read your question, I see that you already use Windows XP SP2, please do not turn off the automatic update, it will protect you from dangerous threat, security problems.
Please mind, that malware or spyware work without your knowing, it can crack your system in just minutes if you don't keep updated your OS.

Hope this is helpful :-)

The updates that are autamatically downloaded are only released if theresome huge thing putting your computer at risk(EX. Microsoft recently released an update for security hole in their office suite). You should at least have it update once a week just in case

ms issues updates once a month unless they are proded by others. go to the update site and customist your needs. it can be turned off. but kinda complex now as they updated thier update software.
