Now that is one of the Big Questions.

Historically, it's not known when the Ark disappeared, or what happened to it.

It was *not* one of the treasures of the Temple, that was stolen or destroyed when the Romans razed the emple of Solomon. It wasn't there. That's actually the only sure thing that is known, but when it disappeared before that, and where it went, is not known.

King David's son, King Solomon, installed the ark in the First Temple around 1000 BC. It probably stayed there in the Holy of Holies for many years. In 586 B.C. the city was attacked by the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar II. He sacked the city and destroyed the Temple. Many of the sacred objects that had been used in the Temple were taken to Babylon as spoils of war. Though the list of items taken by Nebuchadnezzar is extensive, it does not include the ark. This has lead many biblical experts to suggest that the ark must have been taken out of the Temple before the raid. Perhaps it was hidden in a secret safe place by priests fearing Nebuchadnezzar's success in battle.

It's a good question. The Scriptures don't seem to tell us, do they? Ask what was the ark of the old covenant supposed to do? Remind the people of their commitment and connection to God?! There now stands a new covenant sealed by the sacrificial blood of Jesus.

It was lost during the fall of Solomons Temple by the Assyrians. Some say it is lost. Some that the Templar Knights have it under guard somewhere in Europe. It has been said that the queen of Sheba took it with her back to Etheopia. In fact there is a building there that is purported to have the ark in it. And others say it is in Jeruselum under the city in a cave known only to the high Rabbi and to be brought out at the end of the world to be used to communicate with God.

The 6th century BC.

The Ark is mentioned in one passage in 2 Maccabees 2:4-10, saying that the prophet Jeremiah, "being warned of God," took the Ark, and the tabernacle, and the altar of incense, and buried them in a cave on Mount Nebo (Deut 34:1), informing those of his followers who wished to find the place that it should remain unknown "until the time that God should gather His people again together, and receive them unto mercy."

I think when the temple was destroyed... when solomons temple was destroyed it says things great and small were lost

I think the ark was never in the second temple

Interestingly, when the ark was put in the first temple of SOloman the Bible says Aarons rod and the manna were no longer there..... seems only the tablets of commandments were...

almost like JOhn the Baptist who said He must increase and I must decrease... the spotlight fades and turns up on Jesus Christ from other things

An Egyptian king named shishak took the ark back to Egypt at about 900 BC. from there it might have ended up in Ethiopia. A special Ethiopian christian sect guards a place where they believe it is.

They never found it again after the battle with the Assyrians. But, in Revelation 11:19, John says he saw it in a vision in God's Temple in heaven. So maybe it's in heaven now.
