I think the Toyota is probably pretty decent, but, c'mon man. You're rockin' a real (non-compass) Jeep, man. There is no shame in your game.

I have owned and used Jeep Wranglers in the Anzo Borrego desert area for may years among other SoCal off road areas.
The Jeep is nearly bullet proof, very capable off road and confidence inspiring. It is a great vehicle....although they should not have gone to a V6 in the 2007 model.
However, I just took a ride in a FJ on a simulated off road track at the San Diego auto show. While the Jepp is more capable....the FJ was very capable and would be more than enough for most people. The FJ drove at 30 degree angles wihout slip, had more than adequate power for of raod use and climbed a 35 degree hill with a sharp brake....you could only see sky out of the windshield. The compression braking for spped control on the downhill was adequate....again 35 degree downhill descent...although the jeep has better compression braking and speed control.
In the end....unless you are planning on extreme four wheeling.....dropping the car off two foot ledges....climbing huge rocks....two foot deep ditches climber into and out...the FJ will get the job done. It is a pretty amazing vehicle for the price and will have great reliability to boot. I love Jeeps but this FJ is more than adequat for most...and a very good vehicle.

The Wrangler is the king of rock-crawlers. The FJ is a nice ride with a cool retro-style to it based on the original Land Cruiser and legendary Toyota reliability, but for real off-road ability, the Jeep is still the champ. With a short wheelbase, high ground clearance, good breakover angle, good approach and departure angles, wheels set outside of the main body, very good 2-range transfer case, fold-down windshield, removable top and removable doors - it does it's job very well. It's even better than Hummers in this respect due to it's narrow track and shorter body.
The Jeep is even affordable compared with other SUV's leaving you with lots of extra money for accessories like skid plates, wheels/tires, lights, chains, winch, etc...

There sure is alotta plastic body parts on that FJ. Fenders dont allow much wheel travel. Thinkin you should stay jeep. Besides, look at allllll the aftermarket goodies for the jeep!

if i was you, i would stick with the jeep. reasons being they are easy to fix and to find parts for, meanning that you can alwayws put axles out of a chevy truck into it and a lot of other parts too.

all terrain tires or off roading tires will make noise because of the dimension and tread design. also, if your tires are cupped or feathered due to steering or suspension issues, then the noise can get worse.
