The typical life span for a medium-to-large breed dog is 10-13yrs of age. This can however decrease due to common problems such as hip and joint diseases in German Shepherds.

You are already off on a very bad foot. Someone too lazy to do their own research about the dog they're getting should NOT be raising a German Shepherd... they are a very strong-willed dog that requires a STRONG PACK LEADER. I don't mean yelling and hitting it -- I mean being in calm control at all times, working with the dog every single day, and exercising it for 2-3 HOURS every single day. That's right... 2 - 3 HOURS. EVERY DAY. Not just when you feel like it. Shepherds are active pack animals, closely related to WOLVES and they need lots and lots of work to do or they can be aggressive, unpredictable, and dangerous. That's why they make such great police and drug dogs. If you are a "model" - are you seriously going to have time to raise, train, and work with a dog like that? Especially a large, strong, pack dog that will weigh as much as you when it's full-grown and is capable of killing small animals and children ? Think about it. I think you need a reality check and to meet with a local dog expert before taking on that kind of commitment. A more appropriate dog would be a little lap dog that is bred to live inside and would require a lot less hands-on (but it will still require training and daily attention no matter what - just not walking for hours) Or, you might have to hire someone to train and care for the dog - but then what's the point? Seriously - time to re-think this German Shepherd thing don't you think?

The average life span for a German Shepherd, either gender, is of 11 years.
With adequate nutrition and medical care, you can add few years to it.
One of my German Shepherds, I have now 4 left, passed away from old age two months ago, he was 16 years old!!
While 16 years is a very long life for one, many do make it to 12-14.

i have to agree with the first person, it's never long enough. but a healthy german shepherd, regardless of sex lives anywhere from 10-14 years. the average being 12 years. you need to find a good breeder if you are looking for one, they tend to have hip and elbow displasia. the parents should be ofa rated good or excelent. and this is just my personal preference. find a breeder who does not breed for the conformation of the roach back where the back is sloped almost to the ground and the dog is almost walking on it's hocks. unless you plan to show. these dogs tend to have more hip and lower back problems later on. and again personally i do not like the looks of these narrow, sloped shepherds. do your research, these are beautiful, loyal, very intelligent and hard working dogs. they can become quite distructive in the wrong hands. they come in a variety of colors, but i personally always go for the temperment of the dog and not looks first. be prepared for a pup that can drive you to your wits end, and most of all have fun. these dogs are loyal as can be and will be with you 24/7 if you'll let them. find a good trainer in your area that you agree with their training method and someone who knows about this breed. sorry so long, but i would have a housefull of shepherds if i could.

A full bred registered German Sheppard has a life expectancy of 10-12 years. A mixed breed German Sheppard will have a longer life expectancy but I don't know for how long. I have seen large dogs like yours live to be 15. It depends on the dog's health, it there was hip dypsia, and what kind of diet your dog is on. As well as if your dog is happy and is able to run and exercise. These are all common denominators that can be pluses.

Never long enough....
10-12 years. Longer if she's spayed, fed a high quality diet, from a quality bloodline, and taken good care of. No living outside etc...
Make certain that the breeder has checked the parents for CHD,
and congenital heart problems such as TVD. Don't forget that GSD's are from the Herding group and will need lots of exercise.
Edit: Why people think that mutts will live longer than purebreds is beyond me. It's absolutely false. A purebred has every advantage if they come from a quality bloodline. If you do your homework, get a quality puppy, and take good care of her, you can't go wrong.
