why is the freezer compartment of a refrigerator typically on top and the non freezer at bottom? wont the heat from the engine go up to the top, essentially causing more electricity to be consumed to maintain the freezing temperature? isnt it a silly idea, seeing that would cause consumers more money?

I agree with Paca since each area of the refrigerator is a sealed unit, however I wonder why many space heaters for homes and buildings heat from the top or ceiling down. In this case, it seems there should be some adjustments to the design.

The reason the freezer is on top is becasue the colder air from the freezer can be used to cool the lower part. Since the freezer air is colder, it naturally falls to the lower part of the fridge through a connecting tube.

Well there are both types, with freezer on top or on the bottom. The whole unit should be insulated enough that the motor heat does not really make a difference.
