I grew up in a generation where you might get a spanking at school, home, or from your sitter. I got a 22 rifle when I was ten, and oh my god, I've never shot a person. Just curious. If I needed something kinky, I would ask my girlfriend. It's back to work time, thanks kids.

I don't think that society should dictate how one should and should not parent except in the most extreme of circumstances. I also don't think people should be quite as judgmental as they typically are, especially with this particular discussion of spanking children.

That being said, I think every person and every child is different. One should not expect that "if it works for me, it should work for everybody else too".

To answer your question directly, I think that sometimes, spanking may be justified. I also think that many times, it is clearly not justified but it is used anyway. A lot depends on the parenting style and the temperament of the child. For some children, they may need a physical reminder of what they should or should not do. (Positive physical reminders also go a long way, not just negative ones.) For others, simply a word or two or "the look" is enough to make them melt and change their errant ways.

As for you getting a 22 rifle at the age of 10, you obviously showed your parents that you had a certain level of maturity that they could trust you with such a device. Many 10 year olds are nowhere near that mature, so that says a lot of positive things about you at that age, but that is not necessarily an indicator of what other parents should do as each child needs to be evaluated for maturity level by the merits of the individual child. Given the social climate in existance today, I doubt that parents would willingly give their children any fire arms unless there was a specific life or death need for them. I can understand being trained to use guns if your lifestyle requires hunting animals, for example. I'd leave it up to the judgment of hte parents, though, to determine if the child was ready for it or not though.

As for the Commodore 64,

I don't think there is anything wrong with spanking a child. I would not allow a babysitter or the school to give my child any sort of physical discipline, though. To me, a spanking is one or two blows with an open hand on a clothed backside...hitting with a belt or paddle or some other object would be abuse, by my definitions. There are times when my daughter refuses to listen to me, no matter what I say, but a spanking will get the point across. I save it for times when she is doing something dangerous to herself or harmful to others, though.

No, not probably. I ask questions if i want or want something spoke back. Or if i'm bored. I went to three e book signings in the process that week on the writing workshop. truthfully, i don't think of they have been technically e book signings. The authors have been there for a Q&A consultation with us, and have been advantageous sufficient to sign the copies of the books that we had. I went to the night launch of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, yet not something thrilling extremely handed off. And Shelby already advised you approximately as quickly as we went to the night launch of Breaking first easy. We made those cardboard cutouts specifically as a results of fact we'd have enjoyed to do something stupid and stupid, and that i'm specific that we truthfully extremely appeared stupid status there interior the direction of Barnes & Noble with glittery cardboard cutouts of Robert Pattinson. yet, like Shelby mentioned, a minimum of i will say we did it. And, for the record, the cardboard cutouts have been amazing. extra helpful than those they have been advertising on the FYE center. besides, there have been each and all of us of those ladies bobbing up to us and asking in the event that they'd take a image with them, and as quickly as we rotated as quickly as, there became this guy with a digital camera filming us. It became extraordinary. and that's my tale for the day. @Joshms: Oh, you completely desire you have been there. If ladies observed you at a BD adventure, I guess that they had be throughout you. thinking you have been mushy and romantic. ok, perhaps not *throughout* you. yet you get the assumption. @Billet: you're basically jealous xp

Nope, in my humble opinion it isn't. I was brought up with it, being born in 1948 in Britain. My generation of kids, including myself, were much more violent, judgemental, racist and generally nasty than most of my own kids' friends. My son spent a year at high school in Sweden in 1998. I've been to Sweden too. They're not into punishment as much as we are in Anglo-Saxon countries like NZ, Britain and the US. Childrens' books by English-speaking authors like Enid Blyton, Edith Nesbit and Frank Richards have been translated into Swedish and they have to include explanations of, not only corporal punishment, but also things like writing lines and grounding. All this authoritarian crap simply doesn't exist in Swedish society, and from what I've seen, they're a much healthier society than ours because of it.

i think there are a lot of people out there...not all kids, either, that would benefit greatly from a spanking, haha... i just wish people would learn that there is a DIFFERENCE between spanking and beating!!! and yea, the rare spanking didn't kill me, i don't have any emotional scars, and i love and respect my parents, so while I don't think it is the first thing you ought to do, i don't think it is a crime either.

There are ALOT of people that spanking WAS a "big deal" in their lives -- and they're living with the consequences of it to this day. Spanking causes resentment, shame, low esteem.

(Sounds as if you've THOUGHT about using that shot gun...!!!)

No, but then there is the old saying- "Spare the rod, spoil the child"

Who said I don't know, but you can go to jail in this day and age-- and the word NO should be sufficient to discipline your child as it is for your animals.

You have to get their attention once in a while,,, and I don't mean by beating them, a light slap on the butt works.
