i use windows xp professional. i started to back up all my computer onto an external hard disk using the windows utility provided for this.
it is now asking me to insert a floppy disk to make an emergency start up disk. unfortunately, just yesterday i threw all my floppies away thinking that such a primitive thing wont be needed ! is there any way i can make the system create a cd rom version of the emergency floppy ?

I don't think so. Windows backup is a very primative and unreliable form of backup.

Since u said that u use win XP as your operating system then there is no need of the floppy disk. As Win Xp runs only with cd roms i.e the booting procedure is done using the cdrom only it does not accept the floppy disk. if you have nero cd burning it has builtin facilities.

You can ignore this step in the process if you do not have a floppy, repair of the OS can be accomplished easily without it. There is a method of creating bootable cd-roms that have extensive "repair" capabilities, such as UBCD - but if you are just a home user, then disregard this message.

yes you can make a cd bootup disk,,, but your going to have to have all the Dos system files on it... when the floppy disk is made it has all the files required to restore your system from boot up.

so yes you do need the floppy disk sorry to say

I see some of the advice given is wrong... you are going to boot from the floppy to restore your hard drive.... NOT FROM CD
