I have the same problem. At the moment I just turn on the fan over the kitchen stove -- it's close enough to where I sleep that I can hear it. I used to have one of those white noise machines. It was a little round white box, about 3" by 6", and all it did was make various levels of noise that sounded like a fan. My wife bought it. She says they are available in many places -- she even suggested an office supply store. Do some googling and you'll come up with lots of choices.

Have you tried to fall asleep to any other sounds, other than a fan? I had a terrible time trying to fall asleep too, until I bought a nature CD. Some of the sounds are waterfalls, babbling brooks, thunder and rain or birds singing softly. If you're a nature lover, you'll love these to fall asleep to. My daughter knows how much I love my nature CD, so for Christmas she bought me one with whale and dolphin songs ... I love it. Give it a try. I used to stay awake for hours, tossing ... turning and thinking. Now, I'm asleep within 15 minutes. Good luck, I hope everything goes well. :)

I think it's a terrible waste of electricity to have a fan or any other machine going all night!!! Perhaps you could find a CD of relaxing sounds (you can get nice rainforest ones that don't have any music) or tune your radio into a classical station or between stations if it makes a fan-like noise! Good luck!

Something you might want to try is a cd with the sounds of the ocean on it. It's a repetitive sound, like a fan, so it might help you. I go to sleep like that, but for some people they have to pee after listening to it. Good luck :)

The air quality in your room is probably poor and charged with "positive ions" you should get a "negative ion machine"

Yes, they are called whitenoise machines. Some of them come equipped to make all sorts of noises from rainshowers to streams to night noises.
