Airplanes can land on a road ,legally, if there is an emergency or it is a private road!

Sure, In certain remote parts of the world it's actually done quite often. Not really in the US as we have a lot more people, cars, telephone poles, Federal and State regulations, but sure, if it were an emergency and the plane had the room... I mean, what's a runway but a big flat strip of concrete. I don't think I'd want to be on the road when it happened though.

Here's a funny one too that you probably won't believe (Research Tacoma, Wa newspaper stories from about 20 years ago for confirmation) But, my Dad's brother Steve actually had a small plane land accidentally into / onto the bed of his pickup truck as he was driving down the road! I swear to God!

Have a good one!

Yes they can if the road is long enough without obstructions or overhead wires. As for the roads in Sweden that are used by the Swedish Air Force they are specifically designed for that use.
Most roads in the US except for superhighways are not wide enough for any buy the smallest of planes to land on and not thick enough for anything but a small plane to take off from.

Yes, actually the Swedish air force has planes "especially designed" to be able to land on roads. The roads in Sweden are so straight and long that they could be used as landing strips for air planes to be refueled.

But I don't think you should try this with a 747...

They can, and they do. As stated some states it is against the law except in emergency, but in Alaska it is common. If you come to a wide spot in the road, and there is an airplane sign on the roadside, look out for landing aircraft, because they have the right of way.

I think it varies by state, but in California, planes are not allowed to land on roads, unless the plane is in serious trouble or in some kind of emergency. (in the city and suburbs...i dont know about the country side.)

One landed on Hwy 3 here in BC last summer when it was weathered into a valley. I just about had to do the same thing in the same place a few days ago.

there was a pilot in Montreal, Quebec (Canada) who was experiencing engine problems and could not get back to the airport where he took off from, so he had no choice but to land on the road.
