Of course this seems like a stupid to alot of you and you probably think "of course not, there would be no love or peace." Let see why this world would be better with out God. First, war. Look how many countless wars that have been fought because of relegion, right now even. Isreal is in war that was started because of relegion, these psycho taliban zealots who kill Americans in the name of relegion, the Salem witch trials almost 1 million woman killed because some Pope said free thinking woman are witches. 2. Freedom. With many other countries in the world aside (Like the countries where woman cannot show their faces because their God says so.) America is being dictated by relegion. A. Prostitution, besides relegion, what is wrong with a woman having sex for money, its her choice. B. Abortion, if a girl wants to not have a baby thats her right, and some times its the better alternative. C. Stem Cell research, so many people could be saved. This is the short version. comments?

I just read the first 30 answers and I have to say I was extremely impressed. Besides a few stupid answers, most people really gave a good opinion. I thought that many people would chastize me for even dating to think this question, it really makes me feel better that we may be moving toward a better time. those who disagreed with me were polite about it and brought up good points. I also advise anyone who reads this to read Bobarts little paragraph. He completely makes me look like an *** but with grace and I respect him. I tried to keep my beliefs on God out of the subject, my concerns lie more with relegion as a whole, be it muslims, christians or whatever, I believe relegion is bad. A belief is God and an after life is great, just do not push your beliefs on anyone else. Do not get mad when someone has an abortion or uses the lords name in vain or does not believe what you believe. JUST PLEASE!!!! believe what you think is right not what your pastor or bishop tells you to believe.

Also, some other thoughts. 1. It is believed that in the 3 decades of witch hunting close to 1 million woman died, so thanks for that. 2. While there are many prostitutes who have it really bad, 95% of them chose that career. You can say they did it because they had no other choice but thats bull, everyone has a choice. Thats like saying Drugs should be kept illegal because the people doing them just had no other choice. Most prostitutes choose to be so, and yes, usually endure hardships. But there is no reason why prostitution could not be legalized and unionized. All that having it illegal does is perpetuate the Pimps because the woman need someone to protect them, cops wont and Pimps will. And someone said that people would have no reason to be good without relegion. I disagree. I know many atheists who dont kill or steal or lie or cheat. Not because of God, because they feel it is wrong or they fear the consequences of man's law. We live our lives like we want, you should try it.

no, because many religious people do not steal or kill or lie because of their religion. religion guides us. if you use it in a good way and in its real way. then you will see that religion is a very good thing.

Okay, first off, Israel is at war because they were granted territory that the natives of that area didn't think they diserved, not necisarily because of the religion of the people themselves. Likewise, a lot of the negative implications of religion you mention happen to be cultural practices, not religious ones, or religion is simply used as a tool towards an agenda. For example women being opressed isn't due to the religion, which doesn't overtly support the practice, but the culture itself that the religion inhabbits. Likewise, terrorists aren't overall doing it because they legitimately think that the religion mandates such things, at least not at the upper levels, they simply use the religious rhetoric to convince people to join them.
Also, prostitution historically hasn't been a positive thing in any light, women get "forced" into it when they feel they have no other choices, get beaten and killed, end up on the streets doing drugs, contract STDs, etc. In most cases prostitutes are simply being exploited by those who market them (pimps), it isn't so much a willing choice by consenting adults.
Okay, now that I'm done with that rant, while all of these ills in the world really lack too much basis in religion, yes, I think the world would be better off withou religion. Religion makes it easy for people, removes the necesity of thinking for a lot of decisions, the study of ethics, philosophy, or something of the like is a better approach to let people decide what should be happening, not a dogmatic set of rules that are passed down from others. People should think for themselves rather than being given a set of rules at childhood and being rejected if they ever question these rules.
That said, the prevention of religion more explicitly brings about evils more direct and explicitly problematic by nature, so such a religionless world would likely never take place. Marxist countries that have persecuted their religious peoples have killed a great many innocent people, and otherwise persecuted many more, horrible acts. So while I think the world might be better without religion, there isn't much we could do about it.

First I want to point out that I am a stemcell recipient and it is being funded by the Catholic church... but the cells are from a living donor, not an aborted baby. Abortions for stem cell research is what the Churches are against.
And no, the world wouldnt be a better place without religion and I'll tell you why. Because the only people who cause problems are the a**holes of society. Religion doesnt make anyone "bad" Atheism doesnt make anyone "bad" either but there are bad people on both sides, and there are also good people on both sides. But, without religion, good people will be trashed ALWAYS by the a**holes, their choices would be.. become an a**hole too, or try to survive under them. Since, without belief in God, there is no hope for something better after this life, good people wont have any reason to not become a**holes or to just kill themselves because the a**holes have made life miserable.

Sorry, I disagree. some of the points you make depends on each faith. different religions have different views on abortion and stem cell research. believe it or not Prostitution is illegal in many countries due to safety more then morality. As far as wars, sure many wars have been fought in the name of religion. but as a previous question just barely asked. Most of those were do to a high religious/political figures with a personal agenda. i.e. the time the catholic church had two popes and each one secretly try to kill the other.
even with out religion man would still find a rationalization to bring war to further promote there own agendas. Even if it's "lets take over that country because we need more room.
If it weren't for religion we wouldn't have a lot of good things also, the best example I can think of now is the best working democracy to date.

Organized religion is the problem. Belief in God doesn't cause wars. It's the idiots who judge each other because their religions differ. Hell, even in your own personal religion you are judged if you don't agree with everything.
You have made the mistake of charging God with man's actions.
And yes, they are being complete idiots about the stem cell research, and the prostitution, and the gays----the list goes on and on................

Yes, sometimes. In my experience, the most religious people are the most judgmental, the most hypocritical, and the most narrow minded. You can love God without being this way. And just because a person doesn't believe in God doesn't mean that they can't be good, kind, peaceful people at heart

Honestly, no. Most people depend on religion for many reason, but three main ones are for social organization, psychological comfort and to provode an answer for the "after-life." I guess I'm also trying to say that even if one claims "no." it's nearly impossible for the world to ..never have/come up with.. at least one religion.

I have no arguments with you (bobert covered you shortcomings and strengths very nicely... and on shortcomings I'll add that I believe your figure for the Salem Witch Trials is grossly overstated - the number of condemned in New England was very small.)
Nonetheless, good points, all.
Here's a site you may want to peruse. I agree with it's work and I suspect you will, too.: http://ffrf.org/index2.php

You are exactly right. Without a doubt, religion is the number one cause of conflict in this world. This cannot be denied.
Would we all be better off without organized religion? Yes, again, without a doubt. Would we be better off without a delusional belief in an imaginary being (god)? Yes.
Keep spreading the word, religion is not the answer it's the problem.

Yes...somewhat, but it would not resolve all issues....I would hope that people would put the energy and money that they currently give to religion to better use, such as humanity causes. Very interesting question by the way!

No, the sooner mass religion fades out, especially Christianity and Islam, the sooner we can begin to work on world peace.
