They dont want you to vomit and possibly aspirate on undigested food. The anesthesia can make people nauseated but the risk is in the aspiration.

Im pretty sure that all surgeries done with anesthesia are done on an empty stomach...but I can tell you from experience that considering how bad gas hurts after a c section you will be glad that your tummy is empty..and you realllllly want to hold off on that first bowel movement as long as possible...!!

Never really heard that, as you are not put under anesthesia. You are awake. The reason for having an empty stomach during surgery is so that you don't aspirate stomach contents and choke to death.

any surgery is done on an empty stomach...there is a high risk that you could vomit while under anesthisia and choke on your vomit while you are unconscious, and if it didn't kill you, i think vomit in your lungs can still cause all kinds of other problems. also, probably an empty stomach during an abdominal cavity surgery lessens the chance of puncturing the stomach by mistake, and gives the doctors more room to work.

It's so that if the anesthesia wears off during the operation (a spinal can't be increased during the procedure, an epidural can, though) and they have to put you under, you don't vomit and then breathe in your vomit.

That's also why you have to drink that foul antacid right before the surgery.

Believe me, with the gas pains you get after a c-section, you end up being glad you couldn't eat as much the night before.

I am not a doctor but...
If C-sec involves general anesthetic, or could advance to that, that's always done on an empty stomach because it commonly causes nausea. It is very dangerous to vomit while you are unconscious because you can aspirate (breathe it into your lungs).

Often, they try to induce your labor before a c-section. Apparently there's something about the contractions preparing the baby's lungs for breathing. I can't remember the rationale, but they explained it to me when I asked my dr about it. If you do have contractions with food in your stomach, it will come up. Even a popsicle can be a huge problem.
Best of luck.

All surgeries which require an anesthesia are done on an empty
stomach.....no food or water 12 hours before surgery.

It's because when they give you the medication is causes you to become sick. You start to gag and try to trow up....but there is no food. This is so you don't choke. They will also give you Alcaselzar so that when you do throw up you don't taste the stomach acid

I think it is because just in case you need to be sedated, the medication will not cause you to have an upset stomach and vomit. It's a precautionary measure.
