so casting lots is gambling? why are casting lots in the bible not a sin?the divided property(like the lottery today) and they chose apostles with casting lots.Proverbs 16:33 "The lot is cast into the lap, but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD" if the disposing is of the LORD ,then God is a part of sin according to your opinion.

In my research of The Catholic Church there have been many Priest and Nuns who have done the same thing, and gave it all 100% to God, to their convent or diocese, church, ect. Where is the sin in this?

I asked this of an Ana-Baptist once ,and they said "if you give 100% to The Church to God then I guess it wouldn't be sin". 1992 .

YOu could say the same thing about wine or alcohol (strong drink),Proverbs 31:6 Give strong drink(sounds like alcohol to me)unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.Let him drink and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more"Proverbs 31:6,7 . LOOKs like the Bible is balanced but the believers of the Bible aren't?IN other words there are conditons to every law, every commandment? Jesus Christ The almighty "Healed on the sabbath:" and Used labor work to pick people up ect. Yet the law said don't work or labor on the Sabbath.. They sought to kill him because of it.. so you who say I sin are like the Pharisees that wanted to Kill Jesus for breaking a law He made(according to their understanding). Jesus was balanced. It was unlawful for them to do other things, but they did it.Where was there sin? And I'm talking about something that is not written.

why on earth would giving money to a church or charity be a sin?

2007-01-01 16:54:23 · answer #1 · answered by latenightdrives 3 · 1 0

I don't think it would be a sin. The sin is when you buy a lottery ticket when God told you not too.

It isn't a sin to everyone, just to some. If you think it is a sin, then you shouldn't purcase a lotto ticket.

And, even though you want to give the winnings to the needy (and that is a good desire) you still might not win. It all depends on if God asked you to do it. There is no sense waisting $s on lotto tickets if they aren't a win.

I had a friend who always got the door prize in everything we went to together and a door prize was called. I never ever had my name called as a winner. I asked her what her secret was. She said that she waved her ticket above her head and prayed bless bless. Then she gave me her blessing. We were sitting at a Girl scout thing and then a person pulled a name out of the hat & the lady called my name. I was totally surprised. I had won the door prize. So, God knows how to get the winner picked.

Since, I have done that every once in a while & my name gets called once in a while. And I win a door prize.

But I haven't got the go ahead to get lotto / lottery tickets, because I haven't felt led to. I ask God first, if I think about it. I have to get the OK in my spirit.

I know my daughter & her husband have been lucky at bingo or casino. And they paid a tithe on the winnings.

Ephesians 4:28 - "Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need."

There's far more in that commandment than merely a prohibition against stealing. It also suggests that the proper way to earn wealth is by some form of work. It furthermore reminds us that a wonderful use of surplus wealth is charity towards the poor. Gambling subverts all those principles.

Gambling is economic fraud. It produces nothing. It adds nothing to the larger economy. Statistics show clearly that the most profoundly negative economic effects of gambling are felt in the sectors of society where the poverty level is already high. So gambling's worst impact hurts the very same segments of society where charity would have done the most good.

Gambling has none of the elements that make those enterprises good. It involves no work. It contributes nothing of value to the economy. And it is the moral antithesis of charity. It breeds crime and corruption; it undermines character; it does not promote godliness; it violates private industry; it undermines the good of society; it exploits the poor; and it promotes false values.

Why not open a brothel that benefits good causes?

Thats sarcasm, not meaning to insult anyone, but same argument. But really this question is best asked within your own denomination and its scholars rather than on a broadsheet forum like Yahoo where children and those hostile to those that are of different beliefs will respond with opinions that arent thought out or relevant to your religion.

Ask your clergy, ask scholars of your faith that question.

Seriously though, if your motives are to help good causes; with a dollar spent on lottery, know that this years Nobel Peace Prize went to a man whose organization makes small loans of about $100USD to people to start businesses to lift them out of poverty. The power of the dollar spent on gambling, might do wonders spent elsewhere, and thats a great pay off!

Well, I can't answer whether it is a sin, I honestly don't know as I have yet to find a scripture to back it up, but my advise would be...if you have 2 dollars to play the lotto...give the $ to the church instead and believe God for increase and prosperity in your life so that you are able to give more and more. :-) Mal.3:16 I am not a pastor or anything and am constantly learning and growing in faith and knowledge, and that is what I would do..it would feel right to me.

I believe the best person to answer this question is your pastor. Whatever your pastor responds you should take into consideration.

Hebrews 13:7
Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

Honestly,

WOuldn't you feel better if you, with your own strenght and sacrifice, gather that money and give it away to the church. DOn't you think God would look at your offering with delight, like a proud parent?

God bless!

No. It wouldn't be evil to buy a lottery ticket for any reason--unless you planned to buy drugs and giving them to kids or something.
The only problem with gambling in the Mormon religion is that you couldn't pay tithes on the winnings and then you couldn't get into the temple.
Who said it was evil?
They were exaggerating slightly.

It's not evil. It is recommended not to indulge in such things b/c they so easily become habits, which so easily become obsessions are sins, which so easily become illnesses which.

I don't know if it says in the Bible not to get sucked in to the lottery, but I know that if you want to give to the church - do it. if you want to get rich, become a successful entrepreneur or employee. I say 'sucked into the lottery' b/c it's a fact that the chances of hitting it big in the lottery is slim.

forget the ticket and just let them pocket the cost your ticket is an insult to most and the church that gives to the poor is highly unusual maybe a little bit left after they pay their pool bill. But if you notice they get lots of money but the poor and hungry still remain uneffected.
peace out

That was one hell of a rant... But if you were a deacon, and someone else said it was wrong, I'd say it was wrong because priests say it is?... That's how these things work, because one person says it's wrong, it instantly becomes wrong regardless of actual evidence for the wrongdoing.

Ethics, are by nature a subjective practice, you just happened to get unlikely and meet up with the wrong view.
