Because people who don't have those problems don't understand dealing and living them. We fear what we don't understand. Plain and simple.

Usually cause that is how they have been raised by their parents, and that is the attutuide that their parents have, so they grow up believeing that their parents views of these people are right, so they keep doing it too. When in realiitily there is not good reason for shunning others, mentally ill, birth defects, deaf , dumb , learning disable. We are all the same in a way and we all want the same things in life, it is that there are those people out there that want the same as anyone else does. So i really don't understand it. It is just really curl to the people that they do this too, and not right at all. Until the childern of these people learn that they need to not be the same way their parents was, this is going to keep going on. Or when they themself have a child that is different then they will see that they were wrong, or they will hide that child like so many people have. It is wrong, cause being mentally ill or having a birth defect or disable is not different then having cancer, and that . So lets hope that generation, by generation gets changed, and things change a lot quicker then they have been in the pass or even now.

I will answer about those who avoid the mentally ill (or even those who are known to have sought out professional help):

(1) They fear them.

(2) They tire of the constant negativity some of these folks express and how much they are into themselves and their own problems but don't reciprocate with other people. The fact of the matter is that people generally seek out positive people to be around and many mentally ill people give off negative vibes immediately or within a few days of knowing them. Some mental illnesses seem also to have self-centeredness as part of their symptomology -- and people don't want to be around self-centered people.

3. The average person out there does not seem to understand that seeking professional help is of itself a sign of mental health, not one of desperation. Quite frankly, some counselors/social workers are like this -- and they are usually the ones who could not put up with the rigors of the profession themselves but are either still in it out of financial necessity or sort of on the fringes of it -- teaching counseling and social work students and such.

People think that they are superior to them. Some are insensitive to these kind of things, but there are some who laugh or mock fun just to go along with the crowd. Deep inside they feel sorry for them, but it mostly depends upon their understanding. Most of them don't have such mentally ill etc frnds or family member hence they don't understand the feeling the other person feels when they are laughed or mocked at.

Fear mostly. They don't completely understand the disorder or disability that is affecting the other person. Fear that they might have a child with that disorder. It's horrible that it still happens in todays society. We are supposedly a lot more educated then back in the dark ages. Not always sure about that...

do you want a direct, honest answer? the reason some do that is the same reason that on the bus you don't sit by the loud guy who is banging his hands on his seat and/ or eating and making smacking sounds. its just annoyance. these people have had a difficult time learning manners, and that's ok, but it doesn't make us want to hang out with them in most cases either. you are not ignorant if you are disturbed by poor manners.
