Your perception of Mexican Spanish as "fast" is probably affected by two things:
1. You don't yet know how to separate all the words in your mind, so sometimes you just hear a stream of speech that you can't comprehend as individual words. That gives the impression that it's fast.
2. Spanish is spoken with less difference in lengths of syllables than English. English has some syllables that are very long, and some that are very short. Spanish has all short vowels, and each syllable takes closer to the same amount of time as other syllables. Imitating this when you speak Spanish will help your accent immensely. (I teach speakers of other languages to make some syllables longer when they speak English.) In fact, your making certain syllables much longer than expected could be the reason you perceive your Spanish as "slow".
There is nothing wrong with speaking more slowly in general in a new language. It gives people more of a chance to understand you and it gives you more of a chance to think about what you are saying. Don't give up, and don't force yourself to speak faster than you feel comfortable.
Happy language learning!

They're really just talking at a normal rate, it's just that you're not used to the language yet. Just find some Mexican friends that will help you out. Most of them will be glad you want to speak their language. You'll probably start to catch on to the rhythm and sentence structure of Spanish better and faster this way. If you can't find any Spanish speaking friends for now, there are plenty of tapes and Cd's at the library and bookstores to help you out. Bueana suerte amiga.

Faster speed will come with practice. It's not well known to americans who speak only english, but our language is among the slowest in cadence than any other. Why? Who knows..? but tis the case. Fact is, if one spoke english at the cadence of most other languages, we'd look at him as a possible speed freak. lol. Time and practice. Most foreigners are tickled pink with someone who's taking the trouble to learn their language. Keep at it, and don't sweat sounding funny to em. Ya might get laughs, but you'll likely see that it's good natured. (******* everywhere, so there WILL be exceptions lol. )

I'd bet it sounds fast because you think in the meaning of every word. With practice it'll become automatic. It´s also normal to speak slower than them, Spanish and English have different sounds, so you must accustom to twist your tongue in a different way (think in the sound of "R" in Spanish).
Same happens with Mexicans listening Americans and speaking English slowly.

It all comes with practice. Don't worry if you speak slowly. It is most important that you continue to actually use the language to learn it.
If someone is speaking to you too quickly,it is acceptable to say something like, "no intiendo espanol muy bien. Habla mas despacio."
