And no pronouns are used... and the last line is "couldn't put HUMPTY together again," not "couldn't put HIM together again."

... and someone made a good point that the poem doesn't even say that Humpty is an Egg. Actually, the poem is a riddle: After the last line, the question is asked, "What is Humpty Dumpty?"

Female Humpty Dumpty

Apparently he was Male, since the story says, "all the kings horses and and all the kings men, couldn't put him together again"
Yeah, he was cool egg, not a bad sort of fellow, really. Liked to 'yolk' a lot, and kidding around. But he got confused easily, always scrambling things around. And he seemed to be surrounded by bad luck, like ... he was always unemployed, he kept getting laid off work, he wasn't eggactly a good worker either. He was clumsy, a little bottom heavy, and wobbled when he walked. He was always falling... until that fateful day... poor Humpty... he never recovered from that accident... his brains were scrambled.. Oh well..

He was definitely male... a female would have found a mate and had a dozen kids..

It is odd how such an "intelligent" species can be so caught up in gender identity. Had the nursery rhyme been about a female, it is likely that it wouldn't be known by so many.
