Hello. I was just wondering if anyone out there with 9 year olds have experienced heavy duty mood swings? What I mean by that is a horrible mouthy mouth, the "I don't care attitude", deliberately being hateful (picks fights with you about everything). I was told that this was just a phase but it's really getting the best of me. Any suggestions or other stories would help me keep my sanity

The child in question is a young lady. To eliminate a few details...she does not have ADD nor does she have ADHD..been that route.

Thanks everyone! KitKat, I actually have read the book that you speak of. I purchased the book when she was 6. Very good book, but sadly the technicques have been used already...she knows those. :-) I would have told you that in an email but you won't accept them.

I also found that using physical violence does not work. When children are smacked they think that is an acceptable behavior for them to exhibit as well. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Once again thanks for the answers, I honestly never considered the whole PMS thing..dear God...she's 9.

I have a 9 1/2 year old boy. The smart mouth, I don't care attitude, picking fights with siblings (and his dad-but not me, he doesn't dare) is a phase. His friends are all doing the same thing (and we all think the crying meltdowns are are a shocker, too)-just ride it out, this too, will pass. I try to catch him once the storm passes and do a little reteaching on how that could be handled better for smooth family relationships..........but that sometimes falls on deaf ears. Proper discipline is issued for really nasty mouthiness. (privilege removal, etc)

I have a 9 yr old myself. She seems to be acting the same way, I have noticed an attitude change in her. I believe it is from kids from school, because I know I did not raise my daughter to be like that.. I have tried alot of things with her including taking away her talk time on the phone, I have heard its a phase too so I am just going with the flow..... I wish you the best of luck!

Tan his little hide. Or if you do not agree with spanking...find another form of punishment...but it is obvious that correction is needed and how.
This may be a phase, it may be a form of a mental disorder or he may be truly upset about something. But, no matter the cause...he needs to be reminded that this behavior is totally UNACCEPTABLE.

You may want to talk to him when he is calm and see if there is a source to this behavior. If you work and your hours have changed he may be acting out in frustration to that.He could be getting picked on at school. He may be having a hard time with his studies at school.
He may be suffering from a behavioral disorder.Or he may just be testing your boundaries and thinking he's all big and macho.
Again...either way....this behavior needs to be corrected asap before it gets way too out of hand.
And if you are afraid he may have a behavioral disorder then talk to your doctor and see what he/she has to say.
And remember...tough love is good love. And consistency is key.

I have a 9 year old son who I am invoved with day in and day out so I see the different phases he is going through . for one you need to look beyond his mood swings and see what is going on at home first . is there a father image at home or just a man who is stealing your time with your son, or are you always arguing with someone at home with him listening. he is in the 4th or 5th grade so he is in a place where there is other kids who might be getting on his nerves . or maybe he might have some trouble at school with work and he is looking for a cop out from his responsibilities so he makes people so upset that they give into his attitude a let him get away with more and more each time. the mouthy part is who he starting to become, from not just recently but from a time now since he nows what he is saying when he says it. what i mean maybe he has been upset about something for some time now and just opened up his mouth in order to hurt people. next he might try his luck with raising his hand at an adult, if he gets mad enough i know my 5 year old tried once last week but I believe in a good swift one every now and then keeps them in line. but my wife on the other hand doesnt so I get quick results and she gets to talk to them until she says go ahead i give up. On the other hand I talk to plenty of other parents about there kids since we have play dates and mood swings are common but kept under control

Some girls start menstruating as early as 9 (my best friend did). Perhaps her hormones are kicking into full gear. My Mom had 3 girls and said that we were all "nightmares" from the ages of 12-14 (right around the time when we all started menstruating/going through puberty). BEST WISHES.

Well...I have a 6 year old that tries that stuff with me. It is normal behavior if you let it happen and don't follow through with consequences. However, if you follow through with punishments for bad behavior and are doing the best you can, you might need to seek medical advice. He could have add, adhd, bipolar disorder or any number of behavioral disorders.

Sounds like hormones. Puberty is on the way. I was at my wits end like you and got the book called "the spirited child". My child was not exactly "spirited" but alot of the advice worked. My daughter is 12 now and it did get easier when her cycle finally started.

If my kids would have treated me like that when they were 9 years old they would have had some serious difficulty sitting for a few days.

But I guess "warming up" their bottom isn't acceptable anymore. Good thing I had my kids when it was....they turned out pretty darn good too.

we all do that or go through that
My sister is 9, of course i always think she has issues, but you know being sister's could differ from the realistic situation. But maybe it is just cuz she is trying to grow up and act like a prick teenager
