Need more details. How old is the cat/kitten? Is the cat new to your home? Do you have other pets?

I was recently "adopted" by a black and white kitten ( still not named ). I am not by nature a "cat person", so this last week has been a real learning curve for us both. The kitten (normal type, fur, fangs a tail and leg at each corner) was originally given to two small children just prior to Christmas. I think it was a stray (if not it does a damned good impression of one), or else it had been handled roughly by someone (kids?). I found it outside in the rain when I arrived home one night. All I have ever done to keep this animal happy is to give it a nice warm place to sleep, a toilet tray area, and food and water (not milk). I didn't have a proper dog/cat box so I pulled the speakers out of an old hifi box and used that. The thing is that "It" likes to go into this box were it is dark and just stay there between meals. DO NOT TRY TO GIVE A CAT A BATH, it is not good for either of You (works well for the chemist). I have found that just plain human kindness seems to work. If it will take a piece of steak from Your hand then it is less likely to try to take a piece out of You, or to escape. As I understand it a cat must feel that Your home is Its personal territory and that it has free range to come and go as it pleases. I leave the laundry door and a window open so this horrid little creature can do its own thing (just so long as She is home before 10pm). This will sound silly but I think You have to earn the furballs respect, or at least mutual exceptance of each others domestic parameters. Remember don't fight over the remote control!!

In my opinion, it could just take extra time and patience for the cat to get to know and trust you. I wouldn't force attention on it, when it doesn't seem to want it. Perhaps giving it treats and a new toy or two might also help it become more friendly. If it seems to accept some petting, then perhaps some gentle, moderate petting might also encourage it to become more social and trusting. Also, talking to the cat in a reassuring, gentle voice may also help. If this is a wild or feral cat, it would usually take more time to gain its trust. But it can be done. I'm sure there are some cats out there that can't be tamed, but I've seen many that have been.

If this is a pet of yours that you want tamed then we can do something about it. But if we are talking about a ferral cat or ferral kitten then it's different. When they are ferral it means that they are wild. A ferral kitten can be tamed but a ferral cat cannot. In any event what you have to do is called behavior modification where you do a type of aversion therapy. English, you wrap the cat or kitten up in a towel and hold them for an hour each day. Use the towel if they are trying to scratch you if not then just hold them. Every so often rub your face on them, strok their cheeks, pet them, and talk to them in a low silly voice like you would do a baby. You are building trust. What you are doing is proving to them that humans can be kind because ferral animals mistrust humans. If you do this four two weeks I bet the behavior of the cat will change. I know that it has worked for me in the past. Just to let you know, aversion therapy is where you have a fear of something so you confront that fear to get over it. Just like a skittish cat has a fear of being held closely.

Honestly, some cats are just anti-social. Just be patient, offer the cat or kitten some treats or food to let them know you're (or anyone else) isn't going to hurt them. Also, ignoring them sometimes brings them out and about when they realize they could be getting attention.
