Sure you can, or you can ask the groomer to do a "lion cut" (Which is actually quite cute :0). I wouldn't recommend it, if you are in a colder climate, as he will need his coat to keep him properly insulated for warmth, but for the summer time and a regular house dog, there is no problems with keeping an Old English shaved!

It's a bad idea. Dogs adapt to their coats, old english sheepdogs have adapted to the coat they have, they will become chilled in cool weather without it, and can overheat or get sunburn in the hot weather without it. This is not a breed that was ever meant to be shaved, and I think you're asking for trouble by attempting this. If you don't have the time, consider just taking the dog to the groomer for a bath and brushing as often as needed. It'll still be cheaper than paying for regular shavedowns, and your dog will be much happier.

Plenty of people will tell you they've done this, but that doesn't make it safe or right.

You shouldn't keep her shaved all the time. She has that hair for a reason...helps to regulate her body heat. If you don't have the time to keep her groomed properly, find a groomer who can do it for you. You can sometimes find a groomer who will give you a discount rate for keeping regular appointments. The beauty in having an Old English Sheepdog, is her beautiful coat and temperament to match. Why would you want to shave her? I am sure if the shoe were on the other paw, she would find/take the time for you.

Absolutely, yes. If you're not going to keep it brushed, it is much kinder to the dog to simply shave it off.

Try to get the dog in to the groomer often enough so that it doesn't have to be taken right down to the skin. A #4 blade generally leaves a very short coat, but enough hair to protect them. Or some people prefer a 1" cut all over, but this usually costs more as it is more work, and the coat has to be well-maintained in between groomings.

I don't think you are supposed to do that. If you don't have the time to care for the animal properly have you considered trying to find him a good home. I know that there is a club on line for owners of old English Sheepdogs. They may be able to help you in many ways. As a member of an SPCA, they have helped us find homes for some OESDs recovered from our local pound.

In certain climates it is not a bad idea to shave them. We only have a handful of OE sheepdogs that come into the hospital I work for here in Florida and every one of them are shaved down. Especially during the heat of the summer. I never get to see one come in with all their hair grown in=( Depending on where you live and the breed of dog you have, shaving them down isn't a bad idea.

If she is a house dog, I wouldn't think that it would be a problem. But, she doesn't need to be kept very short because in the summer they can actually get sunburns and to help keep her warmer when outside in the winter.

Of course it is possible, just not advisable. They need the coat to regulate body temperature. Some trimming can be easily tolerated, but it is just not recommended keeping it shaved.
