At CSX, if you are working in the yard you'll most likely drive yourself where ever you need to go -- using a cart if you are switching -- the Blazer or Surburban if you need to run to the other end of the yard or something. Its pretty much up to you if you are not told exactly what to do. CSX has a contract with a transport company, rarely will we ever use a cab. I call our p/u people bus drivers but alot of the old heads call them man drivers. Their fleet consists of Ford Asto vans, which are probably seven person vehicles. Only one crew at a time will be transported unless the yardmaster or trainmaster gets permission from the conductor to let another crew ride with them.

On the CSX, some yards have "cab drivers", which are basically in-house errand people. They drive full-size vans and Suburbans, shuttling crews around, checking numbers on cars, and delivering parcels.

On CN, occasionally you'll get a ride around the yard from a yardmaster or trainmaster. But most often, especially if you're relieved enroute, they just call a taxi for you. CN has contracts with cab companies all across the country for these services.
