Please help me, my puppy will not stop peeing inside the house, I am desperatly trying to teach him how to go outside instead of in the house. How do you train a dog to pee outside instead of in the house? Help Please!!!

I would start by taking him out more frequently. It could be that his little bladder just can't hold it long enough. Anytime he pees on the floor he should be taken out to finish his business. You should keep eyes on him to catch him before the act. Set a routine for potty time, get his leash and walk to the same door everytime and say 'let's go potty'. He will eventually understand that this is his cue to go out to pee. If you have hard wood/tile flooring then put down some newspaper down just as a precaution because once he gets in a routine and learns what to do and what not to do, then you won't have to use it anymore. Be firm and consistent with the going outside ritual. But also be sure that you are not forcing him in a way that scares him. He should feel that it is a positive thing to go out and you should give him a treat each time he goes outside.

I'm not sure that there is an easy answer for this online as I am a professional dog trainer/behavior therapist and a dog peeing in the house could be things beyond potty training. A professional needs to evaluate the dog in the home and assess the situation to be sure.

However, most commonly you have [of course unintentionally] potty trained the dog incorrectly or the dog is very insecure [and he/she is marking in the house which is a sure sign of insecurity not mis-behavior, a common mis-conception.]

You need to have someone knowledgeable come in and see what is going on so that you can get some help. Or give us some more details that surround the behavior and I may be able to help better.

I would like to add to ESPERANZA's good answer.

The crate must be small enough that the puppy cannot find a convenient corner away from his sleeping area. A piece of wood with a stand can be used to decrease the size of a larger crate then gradually increase it as the puppy grows.

While dogs have an instinct not to mess where they sleep, if you leave one in a crate too long you will train the pup to do so. If its a young puppy, two to three hours may be maximum. As the puppy ages, it can hold for longer times. There's a formula for that (age in weeks with subtractions, divisions, etc) but unfortunetely, I cannot remember it. I think, though, by six months, the pup should be able to hold over night.

Crate training. Keep the puppy in a crate when you are sleeping, not home or not able to watch him. Take him outside immediately after taking him out of the crate. Take him out about 15 minutes after eating. When you are watching him look for signs that he is going to go (sniffing, circling) take him outside, tell him "potty outside". Stay with him outside until he goes praise and give a treat. Do not yell at the dog if he has an accident correct with a firm non yelling voice. Don't hit the dog or rub his nose in his mess.
