J.R. is right on the money, Microwaves really aren't meant for defrosting, the same with an oven, once the molecular structure is heated in any fashion whether internal or external shrimp and most seafood will start the cooking process

I'm assuming you me thaw shrimp in the microwave, as "dethaw" would mean to freeze.

Shrimp cooks very, very quickly. Even on the lowest setting for a short time, your microwave will cook (and probably overcook) the shrimp. If you're talking about frozen shrimp that's already cooked, then it will move it to overcooked status in a matter of seconds, leaving you with tough, unpleasant shrimp.

Rinse frozen shrimp under cold water in a colander or place shrimp in a bowl of cold water and change the water frequently. It doesn't very long. About 10 - 20 minutes or so.

I've found that defrosting shrimp in the microwave tends to make them tough.

It's best to run it under cold water.
