I did a search online and this is what I come up with
THE EOSINOPHILIC GRANULOMA (also called “the linear granuloma”)
The eosinophilic granuloma produces a classical swollen lower lip or chin or a classical long, narrow lesion running down the back of the thigh. Sometimes proliferations grow from the actual footpads where they ulcerate as the cat is forced to walk on them. There is some tendency for this condition to occur in adolescent kittens though it can occur at any age.

you can see and read more there...
I hope this helps you..
also, I found this little info while searching google for cats with swollen lips (and yes, cats have lips) ...
swollen lips could mean
1. allergic reaction
2. eosinophilic granuloma (rodent ulcer) they can get pretty ugly
3. cancer.
4. abcscess

Hi, it could be a type of cyst, my cat had something similar, but it was on the top of his head. It would appear, then retract again after a while. I took him to my vet after the second time it happened and he drained it, which took about 2 seconds, I have to take him back every 4 or 5 months for a check up and he has tablets to take if it starts to appear again. I hope this helps you and I hope your kitty's lump goes away. It sounds like you adore your cat, and I know how you feel!!! If you want some documentation send me an e-mail and I'll send you what the vet gave me. stephbarden@hotmail.com

Allergies. My mom's cat does this whenever the seasons change. It's nothing to worry about, but you can ask the vet for treatment options if it bothers you.

it could be an allergy to something he eats or drinks, or even flea spray/collar or something he is cleaning off his fur or feet
