Registered Nurse here; The numbness should not have lasted over 48 hours. There is extended xylocaine a nerve blocking agent that can last up to 48 hours, this is frequently given, if the dentist or oral surgeon has reason to believe intense pain will occur after the procedure. As for the swelling, it to should have resolved by now also. Sounds as if you could have some nerve involvement, this would account for the numbness. As for as a malpractice suit, not sure. But should you have permanent nerve involvement, I would talk to a malpractice attorney. However first you need to take care of the matter at hand, go for a second opionin. The symptoms could be from an infection, even though your not having pain. For with a root canal the root of the nerve is removed, therefore one will not feel pain, should the area become infected, unless the infection spreads to other teeth. But I cannot stress strong enough for you to either return to the dentist whom did the procedure, or seek a second opionin.

I've had plenty of root canals done, and I am sorry to tell you that three weeks seems a little bit too long for your face to still be swollen, have your dentist check you again and perhaps give you another dose of antibiotics as it could be an infection....unless your dentist hit a nerve you should no longer have any swelling or pain for that matter...I don't believe the injections would have done that unless, like I said before, dentist hitting a nerve....I always have extra injections because I really cannot take pain....but I have never had swelling for that long...Did you have an abscess, that would probably do it, but your dentist should be able to tell you that....ask questions....good luck and best wishes.

Anytime injections of anesthetic are used, and anytime there is digging going on inside your gums, there is the possibility that you may have residual numbness or nerve damage. Your dentist should have explained this to you, and possibly had you sign a form saying you understood it.

If you are still numb after 3 weeks, the numbness may very well be permanent...or perhaps the knots are pressing on a nerve, causing you to feel numb. The knots are probably going to go away on their own within the next couple of weeks.

Good luck.

No not normal, abcese or infection.,if the tooth treated was one of the 2 lower molars, then the infection spreads to your masseteric muscle ( the one in the corner of your jaw) and if its in the front teeth or bicuspids, then the infection spreads to the tongue. I'm not supposed to say that, but your dentist should repare the dammage free, otherwise, treat it at another dentist and sue him.

Me too had root canal, as you say, i felt unwell & swallown about 1 week. later it's ok, my suggestion is don't eat meat & hard items, don't speak much, just be relax. you have no pain that means it's not going to harm you in any ways,

Possibly, but don't expect to get rich off a lawsuit.

Keep icing it and taking the penicillin
