My friend just got engaged and I want to get her and her fiance a congrats gift...I usually do a gift that consists of four things...something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue...I have been friends with her for nearly 20 years so I have stuff that would be old but that would only mean something to me and my friend and I want a gift for the OLD part of the poem that would mean something to BOTH of them (like a picture of me and her is only meaningful to her...not so much to him)...for example, for my other friend, i did the same thing and I got them the "wedding singer" movie because it is about marriage and is set in 1985. But this new couple already has a ton of movies so I am sure they are covered in that area...Any good ideas for an inexpensive OLD gift for the 2 of them? I have new, blue, and borrowed covered...THANKS!

Find out from the bride what kind of songs or music her and her fiance both like. Maybe there are some songs from the 80's or 90's they both enjoy. Then you could make a CD and those "oldie" songs could be the something old.

Hmmm...most of the time when I have seen or used the something ..., phrase for gifts, it is usually just for the bride. So if you want to do something special from you to her, that would be acceptable and probably expected. I like doing this because it is always unique between the giver and the recipient.

This might take some stealth and some work. See if you can get some older photos of them (from school) at around the same age. Get them copied to the same size and then frame them in one of those folding cameo frames that holds two pics. This will be a great conversation starter in their new home.

Visit antique and consignment shops, flea markets, etc. You should be able to find a nice older item wedding gift (for example, maybe nice water glasses, dishes, an antique book, etc.) that both of them can use in their new life together. If you hunt around, you can find a good deal.

Maybe the something old doesn't have to be old yet. Have you thought about a wedding time capsule? It will be filled with keepsakes of all the pre-planning, events & wedding itself. When it is old it will be cherished by both. Same idea - wedding albums? Good Luck.

what a great idea, how about a bottle of vintage champagne that they could drink together, or some lovely antique toasting flutes? Or how about an antique cake slice, you can have it engraved with their wedding date etc. Those are not all that expensive actually. You realise that EVERYONE will now be pinching your idea don't you.

Yes! This is not for THEM it is for HER!! Everything that relates to memories of young womanhood, beauty, female relationships and exploits! It has nothing to do with the husband to be. So lavish your most loving memories of fun as girls and single and celebrate the memory with an article that clearly endears that memory to her heart. check this out--Ideas for Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

We love the "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" wedding tradition, don't you? It's one of the only wedding traditions that still makes sense in today's society. It isn't darkened by old superstitions about fertility and virginity or cheapened by old wives tales about the moon's alignment. It's just plain cute. If you can, try to select items that can be placed in your keepsake box and passed down to your daughter or daughter-in-law.

Old
The "old" item represents something you are leaving behind or something that is being passed down to you.

· Your grandmother's wedding photo in a silver locket
· Your fiancé's first lost tooth
· Your mother's wedding band on your right ring finger

New
The "new" item represents something you are adopting through your marriage or something that is unique to your new union.

· Your engagement picture on the other side of the silver locket
· The key to your new home
· A token of your first date like a ticket stub or cocktail napkin.

Borrowed
The "borrowed" item should be symbolic of something you respect or admire about someone or something.

· Your best friend's energy crystal
· Your mother's monogrammed handkerchief
· Your mother-in-law's pearl necklace

Blue
The "blue" item really has no symbolism that we can think of - it simply rhymes with "new." Try to select something hidden and small that only you (and later on, your new hubby!) know about.

· A sapphire Austrian crystal heart pendant
· Paint your toes with light blue polish
· A thin light blue ribbon on your garter
