Bound's hubby here:

In New Jersey air rifles and BB guns are considered firearms and, as such, a purchaser must meet all of the requirements (age and criminal record and permits) as a purchaser of a traditional firearm. So, if you want to buy a BB gun or air rifle you need a firearms I.D. card and if you seek an air or BB pistol you need a pistol purchaser's permit.

In most states, and under federal law, a firearm is considered to be any device that can fire a self-contained explosive charge, whether or not it launches a projectile. This is why in many states the purchase of a black powder rifle or pistol does not follow the same steps as purchasing a traditional firearm.

Good luck and happy new year.

It depends on where you are. The laws vary from area to area. In many places the definition of a firearm is "Anything that fires a solid projectile". This adaptation of the law was put into place to restrict the firing of BB guns as well as potato guns (the devices that shoot potatoes. If I were you I would call the local law enforcement agency. If you are located in a city, call the city police. If outside the city, call county sheriff. Ask the Badge on the Floor what the laws are in your area.

in most jurisdictions an airsoft gun does not qualify as a firearm. since it has a low velocity and the internal mechanism are different it is considered something other than a firearm.

you should probably check into your local laws to be sure but i know in **MOST** areas of the united states airsoft guns are not considered firearms. paintball guns however are (go figure)

try checking with your police station. also who was it that yelled at you and claimed you had a firearm? and where were you at. if you are on private property they had no right to yell at you unless you were tresspassing.

A true firearm is a weapon capable of firing a projectile and using an explosive charge as a propellant.
Most purists would limit that to an explosive charge from gunpowder, but it can be extended to CO2, I suppose.

Under federal law, the definition of "firearms" encompasses:

"..... (A) any weapon (including a starter pistol) that is capable of expelling a projectile by the action of an explosive (B) the frame or receiver of an such weapon (C) and firearm muffler or firearm silencer or (D) any destructive device."

Some states and cities define them differently. Some communities include bows and arrows and crossbows as "firearms".

High caliber rifles that hold lots of ammo, some handguns, and shotguns that hold more than three rounds. BAsically if you don't use it to hunt then you can call it a firearm. Not all guns require a firearms permit.

LOOK IN THE DICTIONARY UNDER FIREARMS! And then take the deffinition to the COP that HASSLED YOU! Why do you think they call it AIR/SOFT? The Next step I would take is to go to the
person/s that sold it to you and ask for a written statement or disclaimer stateing that it wasn't a FIREARM!.

GOD BLESS/GOOD LUCK
