Research the Artist. Find out if there were prints made for the oil painting you have, which would be the original. If not, you might still find your painting in a book that has some of his paintings. Good luck. You could take it into a gallery and have someone appraise it. First question would be, "Is it worth having appraised?"

Firstly; Is the painting old? (look at the back, if it's all dark browns and dusty then it may well be). Take it to an auction house. If it's recent, ie, painted in 1980 or thereabouts I'm afraid it's not worth much, probably less than you paid for it. There was a man in Germany who specialised in selling this kind of thing to service people, I think he was accused of fraud, but I don't know if he was ever convicted. Additional detail. A 1980s copy of a 19th C painting is not going to be valuable. It would be bought as a decorative or furnishing picture rather than "art". You could take a chance at auction but be prepared for disappointment.

Do a Yahoo search. Type in Thomas Lee Paintings and it will take you to many sites listing art by Thomas Lee. I did this and got many links to artists by that name, both living and dead, some famous, some not.

Because there are more than one painter named Thomas Lee you'll have to go from site to site until you recognize his style from the examples each provides.

Best of luck.

I'm afraid there are no famous artists who did paintings of cat faces, and none named Thomas Lee other than a 19th century painter who did not do paintings of cats. It sounds like a decorative piece by an unknown painter. Odds are that like most paintings, yours is only as valuable as it is TO YOU.

I have one just like it. I think the cat was named Samantha. Years ago I found this on sale on line for about $150. Can't seem to locate it any longer.

Photo or scan the picture and send it to one of the big auction houses. They are the only people who would really know.
