Luke_ah came to me about 2 months ago with very badly worn down paw pads and nails, a very dirty area under his neck neck and Very red southern parts. Since we have had him, the other conditions have healed but every time we take him to the park, his paws start to bleed. How log should it take for his pads to get tough again? How can I help him in the mean time, they get so bad that they bleed?

I had a Belgian Malinois that I rescued that was the same way (he had lived on hard concrete his whole life and used to pace his kennel for hours and hours). The best thing that I found was doggie booties for hunting dogs (I preferred the kind that has the rubber bottoms) and a pad toughening liquid that you apply to the paws. He would still have tenderness, but it helped a lot. I would also put Bag Balm on his feet every night right before bedtime and then put socks on him so that he wouldn't lick the Bag Balm off. I did this every night for about two weeks and it really helped his pads heal. The Bag Balm healed them, and the booties and pad tougheners help prevent it from happening again (he would run them raw). It would also help to not let him run a lot until the pads heal up. I hope that this helps and Good Luck!

To give temporary relif of this you can wash the paws with luke warm water (to get rid of excess dirt) then pat dry and apply a tiny bit of vasaline to the pads to keep them from drying out. Once you do that you can put socks on the feet and attach with a simple hair tie so that the dog doesn't lick it off. Preferably do this at night so that the dog can relax and the vasaline has some time to work. If the problem persists seek the help of your vet.

I agree with the person who suggested dog booties.Put some Neosporin on his paws, wrap them in gauze(not too tight),then put the dog booties on.Limit his exercise to walks on grass ,and keep him crated at night so his feet can heal.Add some fish oil to his diet as well. This is very good for the skin.if things don't improve, you need to take him to a vet,he might need antibiotics.Good luck.

You can get some stuff to put on paws to help them toughen up. Mushers use all kinds of things on their dog's paws. I'd google for something.

it sounds like he spent a lot of time on hard ground outdoors. it would be best to let him stay inside as much as possible on the carpet. in the meantime maybe you could go to the pet store and buy some of those booties for dogs when he gos to the park.

I suggest buying "Muttluks" dog boots they will help protect his paws from abrasion so they have a chance to heal.

keep the dog on grass only until they heal get some cream from the vet, this is serious and painful for the dog. also the dog licking them will not help it makes it worse. please get the cream and rub it in!
