Start at a track near your home in a beginner division, usually called "Detroit Iron", "Hobby Stocks", "Bombers", "Street Stocks" or the like. Some NASCAR drivers (Jeff Gordon, Robbie Gordon, Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader) drove open wheeled sprint cars before coming to NASCAR. Mario Anndretti also drove sprints before going to Indy, F1 and NASCAR. Many of today's top drivers started driving karts, 3/4 midgets and mini-sprints while still in elementary school. Save your money , don't go to a racing school right away. Try racing out to see if you are cut out for it. You can go to a racing school if you show any promise. All the racing schools in the world won't help you if you don't have the talent.

Your best bet is to join a race team first (if you have absolutely no experience in racing). Plenty of teams at the local level are always looking for help. Make sure you pick a team that has enough backing for a full season and is serious about contending for wins and maybe a championship. Until you actually work on a team, you'll never realize how much time, effort, and yes money it takes to win in a mere 20-50 laps. By working a on team, you'll learn the basics of racing (setup, logistics, mechanics, etc.), while earning a network of contacts to help accomplish your dream. Also a quality racing school could help you see if racing is your thing or not (don't go by what the professor tells you, but see if its really something you dig... trust me it's different behind the wheel of a racecar and behind the wheel of a streetcar)

There's a couple tracks near Asheville. Go to: http://www.chasinracin.com/track-locator/states/index.shtml There's a couple close in Tennessee also.

After you work a raceteam for a year or so, then think about making the move to a entry-level division and work your way up. No one moves up without starting somewhere. And a lot of drivers come from a variety of different backgrounds so there's not necessarily a right answer of where to start racing, but you definitely need some experience wrenching a racecar before making the move to the driver's seat.

Hope this helps...

Well go to mooresville NC that is where all the NASCAR teams are at go to a racing school there and when in school there ask around to the teams in the area. You cant just jump from never racing to nascar so try a small mabey dirt seris and then work up to nascar. All of the great drivers have came up thru the dirt system. If you have good driving experience then you are close to there. I think that a driver is a harder spot to get so think about the truck to the busch series first then you might get a job in a nextel cup ride. That is all I can think of. My best advice is to ask around and then see if anyone is looking for a drive or what ever position you want.

Your Best best is to start locally. with the series mentioned above by another poster. Here a couple tracks that are near you kind of.
Smokey Mountain Raceway Park (3/8 mile Clay high banked oval) Cherokee, NC

Stateline Speedway (1/3 mile Clay high banked oval) Rutherfordton, NC

Harris Motor Speedway (3/8 mile high band clay oval) Harris, NC

There used to be one in Asheville, NC but it was closed in 2000

You can find other tracks in NC, SC, and VA at the source link.

You can always do the same thing Jimmie Johnson did, start having a secret affair with Jeff Gordon and Jeff will get you your own team with pretty matching uniforms and a cool sponsor like Harry's Hemorrhoid Cream.com.

Start driving midget circuits. Go online to www.nascar.com and read histories of drivers. Find out how they started. Most were younger than you are now though. But it is never too late to start.

I think you should follow the advice of those who have told you about schools and tracks.
I just wanted to mention to the person putting down NASCAR that "most dumbest" proves your ignorance. Learn how to use the English language please.
