I have a male cat (about 7 mos) who is driving me crazy...I know he wants to mate because he's started spraying. I don't want to let him out unsupervised so I thought I'd "take him for a walk". How in the world do you take a cat for a walk?

First, make the vet appointment to get him neutered!

Second, get a cat harness and a leash. A cat will slip out of a collar and be gone. Start by putting the harness on him--yeah, he may fight it, but you are the boss. Just make him wear it and he will get used to it. Distract him with treats and toys while he is wearing it--in other words, make wearing the harness a fun thing for him.
Then attach a leash to the harness and let him drag it around. He'll probably play with it, that's fine. Give the leash a tug now and then so he gets used to that feeling. Whenever he's being good, give him treats and attention.
Now it's time to venture outside. Keep a firm grip on the leash and just follow him around. Don't try to haul him around, at least not yet. You want this to be a fun thing for him, not something to fight. When he discovers that this is fun, encourage him with treats to follow you as you gently tug on the leash.
It's work to do this, but it can be done with plenty of patience and food!

cats can be leash trained like dogs, but it takes awhile longer and should be done with a harness not a collar since cats have delicate necks. But I'd first get your cat neutered because the urge to roam and get away even on a leash is likely to happen and then you have a cat who will be missing for several days possibly impregnating a unspayed female. Call your local animal shelter to schedule a neuter surgery which is very affordable (approx. $25-35) in most areas. Some places do it for free if you are low income.

Cats can be trained to walk on a leash but I am not sure if you cat is to old to train. We had a siamese cat that was trained to the leash but she was started when she was just a kitten. Good luck.

My eccentric Aunt had a cat she adored and took him EVERYWHERE. She had a little harness for him, you can get them at pet stores or one that fits a small dog should suffice. Everybody in the town knew them and loved to see them. It was one that went down around his belly and across his chest and he was quite happy to totter along in it. The cat I have now won't have a bar of that c*rap though so try him with a collar and a string or rope around the house to see how he goes before you invest.

Just buy one of those small dog collar/halters for 'toy' breeds, hook it up to a leash, and you're good to go. I used to take my cat for walks all the time... You'll get some weird looks from people, that's for sure.

First, get him neutered. This will calm him down considerably. You can still take him for a walk. You can get a harness for him (goes around his front legs and around his body and is much safer than regular leashes). You'll just have to be patient with him until he gets comfortable with wearing it.

Just like you take a dog. They make leashes for cats. And if it bothers you too much, get your cat fixed. My female cat is getting fixed on monday!

well, you will most likely need a leash and a collar, but cats are very stubborn so i would put on the leash and collar, but just carry him until he wants to get down and just let him wander as loosley as possible with the leash.

Use a leash and harness - but this will not solve the problem. You will need to take him to the vet or animal shelter and they can neuter him.
