i have a sony HT-DDW700 when i plug in the optical cable (or the rca cable also) from my dvd, player to the reciever, with the factory settings, i only get stereo sound and the subwoofer, so i need to know what to do to get dolby digital 5.1 channel surround sound on the reciever from the dvd player, i have everything hooked up right but it never says or shows dolby digital

Check your DVD player settings as well.
By default, digital out may be in PCM mode instead of Dolby digital.

Check also your DVD-movie audio settings, make sure it is set to Dolby 5.1

Finally, make sure the receiver is in AUTO or Dolby Digital mode

Hate to say this, but read the manual for your reciever. You may have to go into the surround menu and make changes. Default setting may be for 7.1 rather than 5.1. Use the video out from the reciever to your monitor to navigate through the reciever's menu, if it has that option. I am not familiar with this unit, but I think the problem is in the surround set-up. Hope this helps.

try using your remote to brouse I think this is a feature that has to be activated via your remote, check your settings I'm not really familliar with your device just trying to help
