Actually, sit-ups and crunches are useless. They only increase your muscle mass without achieving the ultimate solution of decreasing fats. Hence, if you keep doing crunches without cutting fats, all the muscles will build-up UNDERNEATH those layers of fats. The best way to obtain that flat tummy is to do cardio exercises (those that work your heart), for example jogging. This will increase your metabolism rate, and at the same time, burn off those stubborn calories. Obtaining a flat tummy is not easy, and requires constant hard work. Pick a cardio exercise (or various ones) you enjoy, and do it at least 3 times a week, at least 30 mins each day. Watch your diet and abstain from fried food and meat. Take more greens and fruits. The keyword here is 'moderation'. You should be able to see results about 3 months later.

The same exercises to define your abs will also flatten your tummy. Sit-ups are good.

Sit on the floor, hook your feet under a sofa or chair and raise the top half of your body up and down. Start out slow and work your way up to 10 a day.
