My daughter is 21 mos. old and closes her eyes tightly and cries whenever the wipers go on. Has anyone had a similar experience? She seems like she is in pain and I don't know what to do??

lol, I'm so sorry but that sounds so cute and funny.Kids become afraid of the darnedest things sometimes.

Personally, i think it is a combination of the rain..then this sudden noise from nowhere!...bam! then these weird looking things are moving on the window...eeeeeek! Get me outta here, this place is crazy! at least that may be whats going on in her mind.

you can try warning her..like use the same phrase each time b4 you turn them on.Such as..its raining, i have to turn the wipers on.Kids like to be warned about certain things. And she will still be afraid but at least she was warned.
you can also let her use the button a few times to show her.She will most likely jump out of her seat when she hits that button then those wipers come on...but she may relax after a few once she sees that she can control it.
You can also try getting her a toy car with noticeable wipers on it......she may associate the 2 and calm down after a while.
Either way, i think this will pass and she will get used to them.Just try using them a little more often when she is in the car.

Perhaps she doesn't like the sensation that her brain gets when she sees the wipers moving. Some children are particularly visually sensitive, and the movement of the wipers may actually "hurt" her processing part of her brain where the visual information is coming in. Have some books or other toys that she can play with in the car, and try to distract her with those when you have to use the wipers. You can also put her seat behind the driver's seat so that she has a more limited vision of them. You can also try giving her a vibrating toy to hold- sometimes vibrations can really help a child who is dealing with negative feeling incoming sensory input. It gives the mind something else to think about instead of the visual input that is distracting. Then again, she could just be scared of the wipers... try talking to her about what they do, "these clean the window so we can see where we are going" and letting her touch them from the outside (when they are off, of course).

That sounds so darn funny. Why don't you try to allow her to touch the gadget that makes the wipers work and maybe put them on the very slowest speed possible. Perhaps if she sees she can control them she will not fear them....just a thought :)

Show her how the wipers only come on when its raining. You could use a hose and show her how you turn them on. Its the fact that they seem to just come on whenever that bothers her I bet.

Kids temporarily become afraid of things that we don't think they SHOULD be afraid of and thei fears often seem silly to us. It's just a phase and will pass. My daughter was afraid of wheels at that age.

Nope, never had this experience. Maybe her seat straps are on too tight? Perhaps it's just something she's going to have to learn to cope with and become desensitized to it.

Don't make a big deal out of it and she'll probably stop it.
