Hi Christy...consider using Nature's Miracle Just for Cats found worldwide at any pet store. It's an enzymatic neutralizer specifically made for cat urine/feces odours which works by breaking down feline urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas.

I had this problem & tried vinegar and it didn't work well for me, so I simply rented a deep-cleaning carpet shampooer - and it did work. But the cat started peeing again in corners around the house. The carpet smells and in other places the baseboard is warped. Often we don't notice the cat is peeing until it has done it many times, and by then ... it is bad.
Just FYI, I've learned that this particular cat of mine seems to have chronic bladder infections, which leads to indoor peeing. He is neutered and is an indoor-outdoor cat, but for some reason he contracts these infections, and when he does, he starts to pee inside, even though he has easy access to outdoors. This happens about 3 times a year.
I too am frustrated.

Whoa, I'm glad it's warm outside but spay/neuter is the best way of resolving the issue.
As to your rugs, vinegar works great and is the most 'cost-effective' cheap way of solving in the meantime. Of course, your rug wils smell like it's been pickled for a short while but it smells better than cat urine.

I will often use Tuff Stuff, which you can find in the automotive area of Walmart. Weird, I know, but it works.
Also, a wonderful product for smells is called Resolve for Pet Stains. It does a good job getting rid of stains and smells and it is safe to use around animals

Try going to petsmart, or petco or any pet store and seeing what they have available. Typically if it says on the bottle it will help with cat urine, it will work! Surprisingly enough they really do!
My favorite is called "urine gone" or "nature's miracle" both work delightfully well!
Also neutering will help if you decide to keep your happy stray friend! It should stop the spraying altogether or at least he will limit it to the litter box. My cat did! Good LucK!!!

Adeline I cannot about that stuff, sorry, but you and I have had numerous discussions about cats, particularly yours, and I applaud you for asking the folks to chime in with poetry about cats with some specificity. Once as a young boy, Our cat Chingitskuk birthed four I was Dr. Thomas Bri, sat outside, Yes, in the country they were outdoor cats The delivery room was the back porch Right next to the dryer outlet, giving off heat The first three came out of her easily, one by one, Their names were Huey, Dewey and Little Louie The 4th entered this world like a waterlogged cocoon Thought she was dead, but I would not give up on her So I cleaned all the 'goo' off her and kept her warm Hours went by and I could see that she was alive My five brothers could not believe all I did to save this little kitty She lived, and I lived, and I was king of the hill in this sibling rivalry I named her Gooey, what a ladylike name I was so proud of her She was the ugly duckling, but to me, the most beautiful Most of my life, due to unforeseen events, I disliked cats Only after playing doctor and saving one and claiming victory The last several years though am a changed man for the better As Milo and Mia Marie run the show in our household. Peace _______________________________________... Edit: Addie: No, story was not sad on Gooey. All four became healthy kitties, though you could tell Gooey was different....a sort of ragamuffin... beauty comes in the eye of the beholder, and the saving of this little one helped me realize the beauty of the heart is more important than the exterior---not only that, but accentuates the outside, for as I said, Gooey was a beautiful kitty on the outside. This by the way also applies to human beings. lol From what I recall though, we had to give them all away. That is a good ending, because Dad would not let us keep the dogs and cats inside unless it got very cold outside. We did put a heater in the garage though, so they all had a warm refuge. _______________________________________...

The only product that works for me is Don Aslett's X-O. They use it at the Vet's office. It will even remove Skunk odors. It is always best to get to the stain/spot before it dries.
Then, as Bob Barker says: "Get you pet spayed or neutered"...

You will never be able to get rid of the smell, and if you ever get another cat...it will do the same thing...in the same spots. And...if it gets really humid and you don't have the air on...beware...it will smell to high heaven!!!! Sorry about your luck..that's one of the worst things to have in your carpet. My friends mom had to get all new carpet and the underneath wood floor.

Clean your carpet with white (Clear) VINEGAR. When it's dry sprinkle baking soda on the spot for a day or two. Good Luck!
