First of all you have to be able to see yourself as others see you. There is a company that makes mirrors that don't reverse left to right. See www.truemirror.com

Second, for a photo to look as realistic as possible, it has to be viewed at the proper viewing distance, so you will see it "orthoscopically." If the picture is life sized, the viewing distance will be equal to camera to subject distance when the picture was taken. For example if you were photographed with a wide angle lens, with the camera only 1 foot from your face, and you produced a life sized print, you would have to view it from a foot away. Your nose would appear rather large in such a picture, just as it would if you were viewing a person from a foot away. (This is obviously not the best the way to make a portrait.)

Finally, to really see a picture that matches reality, it has to be shot in 3D. Cameras like the Stereo Realist that were made in the 1950s can do a good job of this. These cameras take two color slides at the same time, which are viewed in a special double viewer. The focal length of the lenses in the best of these viewers is equal to the focal length of the camera's lenses, which insures that the final image will appear to be the right size and as realistic as possible. An alternative would be to have a life sized holographic portrait made. There is a company in San Francisco that makes such portraits - however they are fairly expensive.

The image you see in a mirror is not exactly the way you look. Some mirrors distort the image even when you think they are perfect. The image of the picture is the real you, not what you see in a mirror. Also remember that the image is also reversed and nobody is perfectly simetrical.

When you look at yourself in real life- you look in a mirror. You see yourself reversed left to right. Since people are not completely symmetrical- this certainly changes your appearance.

The photo of you is more 'real' than how you see yourself in a mirror.

It's easy to flip a photo horizontally with almost any basic photo program (photoshop).

You have a picture inside your head of what you look like but it probarly is different to what you really look like, the camera does't hide or highlight your faults your brain may but lighting makes a big different
