There are two types of headaches: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are not associated with (caused by) other diseases. Examples of primary headaches are migraine headaches, tension headaches, and cluster headaches. Secondary headaches are caused by associated disease. The associated disease may be minor or serious and life threatening. Migraine headaches are common. Migraine headache is caused by a combination of vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessels. During a migraine attack, the temporal artery enlarges. (The temporal artery is an artery that lies on the outside of the skull just under the skin of the temple.) Enlargement of the temporal artery stretches the nerves that coil around the artery and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the artery magnifies the pain.
There can be many triggers for a headache...stress being high on the list...or lack of caffeine (if you coffee, soda or tea or another caffeine product daily and then don't have it), allergies, and a whole host of other problems/issues can cause headaches. I might suggest if you have very severe headaches that you see a doctor as it could be a symptom of a more complex problem. Good Luck. I hope this is helpful for you.

Tension headache
About 90% of the headaches out there are tension headaches. Tension headaches are usually caused by the contracting of the layer of muscle around your skull, which in turn can decrease blood flow to your head. That's why you'll feel a band of pressure around your head, and that steady pain typical in tension headaches.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

Vaso-constriction.
That's why caffeine helps. It's a vaso-dilator.
