At noon and midnight the hour and minute hands are exactly coincident with each other. How many other times between noon and midnight do the hour and minute hands cross?

One with the correct answer first will be awarded best answer.

Have fun ....even if it's old or you have heard it before. Not everyone has ;)

This is the solution.

The 11pm episode never really happens because by 11:55 the hour hand is really almost to 12 so by the time the hands cross its midnight.

There are only 10 Since the hour hand moves and does not sit on 1 number.

For example 1:05 is close enough to be correct but at 6:30 the hour hand is not on 6 but halway between 6 and 7.
So the actuall time for the hands to cross is closer to 6:35.
The hands do not cross at 10:50 but closer to 10:59.
Thats why there is no time for the 11 pp hour for the hands to cross because by then its midnight.

Hm, okay. Start with both hands pointing up at noon.

Between noon and 1pm, the minute hand goes full circle but it doesn't pass the hour hand.

Between 1:00 and 2:00, the minute hand goes full circle (from 12 to 12) so it crosses the hour hand.

Between 2:00 and 3:00, same. Same for 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, etc.

Does anything special happen between 11pm and 12pm? Lessee...... the hour hand starts at 11 and the minute hand starts at 12. They both end up at 12.

We've been told not to count noon or midnight. So that leaves us with 10 times that they cross.
