I know a lot of Moslems won't like this Answer, but, the fact is that Mohammad was from that part of the beni al Quraish which had become followers of al Lah, the Moon God, a cult that had gained rapid growth after the meteor had hit near Mecca and was taken to be a Sign as is mentioned in the Bible, and the rock itself, called the al Hajrul Aswad was enshrined in the Ka'aba, aka Bait Ullah, of House of al Lah.

I really find it very hard to believe that Mohammad, with the kind of life he lead, could've really been a Prophet, at all. He seems to have been the kind of guy who was lucky in that he has been fooling some people all the time.

Anyways, he was born in the Year of the Elephant, when it's said that the Christian King of Yemen had mounted an attack on the Ka'aba leading his Army on his elephant which, as soon as it came in view of the Ka'aba, went down on it's knees and saluted the Ka'aba seven times!? The superstitious Yemenis took this to be a Divine Intervention and fled. This had always been in his heart, and Mohammad, for all his "reverting" to his Jewish roots, held al Lah to be his real Master.

That's why his name for God was Allah and he suddenly got the "revelation" telling him to change the qiblah, or Direction of Prayers, from Jerusalem to Mecca and the Ka'aba and he made it mandatory for all Moslems to kiss the al Hajrul Aswad.

Strangely, also, Moslems believe that Mohammad went to Heaven on his winged donkey - al Burraq, from the Rock of Abraham in the Mosque of the Dome, which was a story created by Omar, father of Hafsah, the second Caliph who made this up to claim the rock and build the Dome around it, for the Moslems. Fact is that Mohammad died in Medina.

Cheers!!!!!

Genesis 25:9
And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

Genesis 13:18
Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Muslims look to Jerusalem as the 3rd holiest site for Muslims because they believe that Muhammad rose to heaven from the Dome of the Rock, which is the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. .

Whichever way to view or disect it, it's still the same God, the same Abraham, the same path of God.

Sorry, but Muslims have a right to Jerusalem as much as anyone else, if not more. Islam is really "version 3.0" and the latest of the messages from the Lord of the Universe. Everywhere belongs to God, therefore The Holy Lands belongs to God, wherever they are...

makkah is an accepted spelling, arabic is a phonetic language and there are usually more than one way of spelling a word or name and this is how it is pronouned in arabic rather than mecca. an interesting question my guess is that they want to keep some things sacred for muslims only or that they are worried that some extrement anti muslims may damage the holy site.

Jerusalem is where Mohammed was taken up into heaven. Abraham was the father of most Semitic people.

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

Glory be to Him Who carried His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Distant Mosque, the environs of which We have blessed, that We might show him some of Our Signs. Surely, He alone is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.

And We gave Moses the Book and We made it a guidance for the Children of Israel, commanding, 'Take ye no guardian beside ME,

'O ye, the progeny of those whom We carried in the Ark with Noah.' He indeed was a grateful servant of OurS.

And We had clearly conveyed to the Children of Israel in the Book: 'You will surely do great mischief in the land twice, and you will surely become excessively overbearing.'

So when the time of the fulfilment of the first of the two warnings came, We sent against you some servants of OurS, possessed of great might in war, and they penetrated into your houses and it was a warning that was bound to be fulfilled.

Then We gave you back the power against them and aided you with wealth and children and also made you larger in numbers than before.

Now, if you do good, you will do good for your own souls; and if you do evil, it will be to your own loss. So when the time for the fulfilment of the latter warning came, We raised a people against you that they might cover your faces with grief, and that they enter the Mosque, as they entered it the first time, and that they might destroy utterly all that they conquered.

It may be that your Lord will now have mercy on you; but if you return to mischief, We too will return to punishment, and remember We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.

Surely, this Qur'an guides to what is most right; and gives to the believers who do good deeds the glad tidings that they shall have a great reward;

It's a jealousy/competetive thing. If the Jews got it, the Muslims want it. Sibling rivalry.
