but he is always asking me ..."what time is it dad".....so i tell him some random number like 41 o'clock to satisfy him , and then my other 2 kids just crack up laughing because they know thats not the right time.........i used to go out of my way to give him the exact time....but now im just more interested in why he's always asking me the time.........maybe he thinks it's funny..... what do you think?

maybe he's heard someone else ask the time....and it sparked something........then he just kept asking and now to him its become funny......he notices when the two older children crack up laughing......so maybe he's playing the what time is it game ....i say laugh it up as long as you can....i would even switch it and try asking him what time it is....see what he comes up with.......if anything else its something to tell him about when he's older......all kids love to hear about the funny things they did when they were little

I think kids just pick up on that because most households are controlled by the clock and there hear "we have to be here at a certain time" so families can stay on schedule. My son is 6 and still has no concept of time. I've tried by getting him an alarm clock to help wake him for school and I also bought him a wristwatch with Star Wars to help him learn. It was great fun for a couple weeks then he quit wearing it. It was easier just to ask us the time.

I have a three year old and at that age, they really shouldn't have any concept of time, unless of course they're a little insecure about something. Has he ever been picked up late or promised something at a special time and then didn't receive it? Think back. I'd also get him a watch with big numbers on it and teach him how to tell time. Maybe once he has a clear understanding of how time works, he'll be more secure about it.

Most four year olds are developing their concept of time, so now is a great time to start making concrete examples of time. Get a big easy to read clock for the wall, start pointing out how long things take (your show is half an hour long, we take half an hour to eat dinner, right now it's six o'clock, and when we're done eating it'll be six thirty)
When he asks you the time, just tell him. He wants to know. He knows that he's left out of the situation, and probably is trying to catch up to all the big people who know more than he does.
Good luck, I love this age. They are little sponges learning EVERYTHING around them.

I haven't read the responses that others have given yet, but I can tell you that when I was younger, my life seemed like an absolute uncontrollable whirlwind of events that I had no control over. I was placed on medication, but I vividly remember one year being given the gift of a watch. Not only did it allow me to learn my left from my right which I had always struggled with up to that point in time (my watch was always on my left wrist), but it also allowed me a sense of physical time and order that I'd never had prior to that.
So to answer your question, its possible that he thinks it is funny, but its also possible that he simply feels he needs more "controlled structure" in his life. Certainly, thats what having a watch gave to me.
I don't know if this will be helpful to you, but I certainly hope so. Be well.

buy him a digital clock for his room and a regular kid watch so he can learn to tell time. By telling a really wrong answer, you are going to confuse him and make it harder for him when he is in school. He will ask about 41 o'clock and then be embarassed. Try to be honest with your kid and have him look at a clock and ask him to tell YOU what time it is. That way it is a learning experience.

my 3 year old does that. Maybe if you show him that "daddy comes home at 5pm. It's now 2pm) and maybe count the hours before he does get home.
Kids are just curios about everything!
He probably always hears you and the other family members talking about time, and wants to join in.
my son is always asking me the time, and what time things are happening.
You are probably just going to confuse him telling him random numbers, and it may cause problems when it comes to learning the time. Make it fun and educational!

One of my children was like this--very interested in time. It can by annoying-but it's part of the job, I guess. Maybe you could find an inexpensive digital watch he could wear or look at to see the time as much as he likes.
He's probably just focused on time for while, then he'll move onto something else.
Four year olds are adorable!

I don't think he is asking because he thinks it's funny, I think it's more likely that he is just trying to get your attention. He may only have it for the few seconds that you answer him, but he has it. He recognizes that when he asks, he'll get an answer out of you. Kids want (and need) their parents attention. Try asking him to come and sit with you for a few minutes, then just chat a little with him, or read him a story, or offer to color with him...or anything else that comes to mind. Just giving him a little time each day shows him that you love him, and he needn't ask you 100 times in a day what time it is (or any other question) to get your attention.

I teach kindergarten, and my students have no concept of time either. They aren't old enough yet. Make sure you are telling him the right time though, you don't want him thinking that it a real time and being confused when he does learn. In about two weeks, I will be working on telling time with my kindergarteners.

I didn't get the clock thing figured out until after kindergarten. Have you considered buying him a digital watch? If he knows numbers, you can tell him to tell you what time it is, and teach him about time at the same time.
