It began as a small spot about the size of a dime and now about a month later is about the size of a nickel. Last night we found another small area near his fron leg. He does seem to scratch at it. He is going to the vet tomarrow but I wanted to get some info on mange since I don't know much about it. The skin is intact. Does'nt mange cause blistering and the skin to open and weep? Also, how do they get it? He is up to date on all shots and otherwise very healthy. Any suggestions or info? Thanks!

I believe your dog may have "Demodectic mange" because of the sizes of the areas you mentioned. I do have good news, however, and that is that you can cure Demodectic mange using medicated shampoos. Amitraz is a parasiticidal rinse that is licensed for use in many countries for treating canine demodicosis. There are also drugs taken by mouth called doramectin and milbemycin. Mange is caused by microscopic "mites" that infest the skin. Symptoms are of course hair loss, but also itching and inflamation. This may not be your pet's condition so I would make sure you see the vet. Good Luck,

There are 2 types of mange, Sarcopic and demodex. Sarcopic mange is the same mite as scabies in humans. This manage can be treated with an injectable or pills. The demodex mite is present in all dogs, it's only when their immune systems become stressed then the mite becomes active. Demodex mange can also be treated, but it's more difficult to treat and flare-ups are always a concern. Sarcopic mange is contagious to humans and other pets.

As some of the other posters have pointed out, it could very likely be mange. One of our Danes had is when he was young. It was an area of hair loss about the size of a baseball. The vet tech did a skin scrape to confirm the existance of the mites and they treated our dog. Have not had any issues since then and all the hair grew back.

There are different types of skin mites that could be causing the problem Bring him to your veterinarian and have a skin scrape done; this way they can check for mites and mange. Certain forms of mange can occur in that manner without spreading or getting ugly. The treatment for mites/mange is relatively easy and inexpensive but requires a microscopic diagnosis first.

Every dog is born with demodex mange. Whether or not they fight it off is all based on their immune system. Most dogs have strong enough immune sytems to fight it but some do not. It is not catching to other animals nor is it heridatary. The dog has to get to a vet, when the mange really starts to set in since it doesnt seem he can fight it without meds he will lose all hair and massive amount of weight until he is skin and bones (not a pretty sight). Please take your dog to the vet and get it treated.

I don't think that it is mange simply because if it was it would have spread much quicker than that. Dog with mange (all types) can go from one little spot to it covering half of the dogs body in a week.
