My family is Baptist and don't believe in drinking at all. I like to drink a little wine now and then. I don't see a problem with it since I don't drink to get drunk and it hasn't become an addiction. What do you think? Can it lead to more drinking?

I am 30 and of legal age to drink.
My family believes in Bible times that the wine was not fermented. Is there anywhere in the Bible that states otherwise??????

Jesus turned water into wine...how could drinking wine be wrong?

Jesus did turn the water into wine, not grape juice.

I go to the Baptist church and do not drink. It is not a sin to have a glass of wine or a beer as long as you do not get drunk. However, because I would not want to give anyone an occasion to stumble I stay away from alcohol. Drinking can lead to much more drinking in some people.

Yes, I live in the south and know where you are coming from. No, drinking wine or any other drink is alright as long as it is not done in excess. Paul tells Timothy to drink a little wine for health reasons and the wine Jesus was definitely fermented. Simple fact: did the Jewish people of that era make unfermented wine? No. The Baptists twist that text to agree with their traditional understanding which supports their own cultural perspectives.

You can't prove from the Bible that drinking is a sin. The wine that Jesus made must have been fermented or the text doesn't seem to make sense.

But common sense tells you not to allow yourself to get in a state that you will make bad decisions. Drunkenness has caused so many tragedies and has done so much damage in this world.

But a glass or two of wine....that's fine.

I believe that anything in excess is sin. If you are not drinking to get drunk, there is no reason why you should not have a glass of wine once in a while. You asked if it can lead to more drinking, and the answer is yes, if you let it.

Wine is all over in the Bible and it was drunk by many religious men including Jesus. You can drink from the vine for year health as long as you do not get drunk. Getting drunk is freeing the mind for sin.
Some of my family are Baptists and I used to be one. They dont believe in dancing either and it can be harmless, it is all about who and how. Many of my Baptist relative did smoke though and I believe that is a sin as you are destroying Gods creation.

I do have a hard time thinking the wine was not fermented. Like the others on here, I tend to think it's not a big deal. I don't drink alcohol at all, but that's because of family issues and my own personal feelings.
I say, just pray about it, and go with your gut. If God does not condemn you, don't let anyone else do it.

If you have just been drinking a little and have no desire to get hammered, then I doubt you'll become an alcoholic.

Is it a sin? One definition of sin is anything that distances you from God. Drinking wine doesn't bring us closer certainly, but does it distance you from God? You tell me.

I've been a Mormon for about 18 years so I don't drink anymore. But I still think about sangrias and beer on hot summer days. In fact, I'm thinking about how nice some Drambuie would be right now. Is that a sin? Just thinking about it?

Alcohol is a problem for some people (alcoholics).
Keep it in the cupboard when they are around.
Some congregations go to the extreme of zero tolerance. Other congregations will have a beer with dinner.
Europeans have very little problem with it.

The Bible says to avoid drunkenness.

Other than that, 1 Timothy 5:23 says a little is ok.

The other thing to watch out for is causing offence. 1 Corinthians 8:13. Especially around alcoholics.

Besides, too much and it gives you a headache, which is just silly.

Well, it did say in the Bible to 'drink wine and be merry'. It says in a lot of other places like during the Last Supper even Jesus gave the dicipls wine to drink. I really don't think that a little wine is a sin. As long as you don't over-do it. The Bible also says to take care of your body because it is a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

I am not 100 percent sure on whether or not it is a sin, but I know that things that result from drinking alcohol can be sinful, dangerous, and unpleasing to God. I am only 20 but I have never drank alcohol and have no plans or desire to. I figure it is just better to stay away. Who knows, if I did decide to try it, I might like it so much I could turn away from God and become an alcoholic. I just figure that there's plenty of good things to drink without drinking alcohol so why risk it. Also, I have heard in various places that if you are asking if it a sin and you are not sure, then it probably is.

Just had another thought-It says that our bodies are temples and that we should treat them like that and not do harm to them, alcohol can cause liver problems...which is obviously harm that could have been prevented.
