5 months is young, but it is possible. Heat could last 1-2 weeks, depends on the cat. Typically, a cat in heat has a distended vulva (you can figure that out if you don't know what that is... just think about it) with lubricating discharge (figure that out too!).
Scratch her at the base of the tail... if she puts up her nether-regions invitingly, she's probably in heat!
You can get her fixed while in heat, but it will cost more, and it's not as safe. So put in your earplugs and wait until her heat is over, but don't wait too long!!! Cost depends on your location. If you can't afford it save up... it is important and it will save your cat's life. Some areas (like Los Angeles) have groups that will help you fund spaying and neutering due to the gross amount of unwanted pets being put to sleep. So search around your location and you may be able to find help. Also, call your local ASPCA, Humane Society and animal shelter and they may have details about programs in your area.

There's really not a whole lot you can do for it. Some cats are only in heat for a day or two, other cats will go into heat, and will stay in heat until they're bred. I would start saving what money you can to have her spayed ASAP (I understand sometimes you just don't have the money to have that done) or see if you qualify for something called Care Credit. It's basically a medical service credit card that allows you to pay off the vet bill over time. There is interest, but it's not outrageous. Beyond saving money for it, you'll just have to put up with it until you can get her spayed or until she goes out of heat. I know cats like that can be annoying, but it won't last forever. Hope this helps.

Yes, that sounds like she's in heat. Five months is a little on the young side though, I think. A cat can stay in heat for up to a week at a time and will go into heat every few weeks or every time she spends time around a male, until she gets pregnant or spayed. Cost varies, depending on location. Where I live (aka The Middle of Nowhere) a spay cost about $100, including pain medication and anesthetic. Cats can be spayed while in heat also, btw, but usually vets charge more for the operation then.

She may be in heat - it's a little young, but not unheard of. Cats are usually in heat about 5 days, and some are more demonstrative than others. Problem is, she'll cycle about every 3 weeks for months on end, until she gets pregnant or spayed.

The cats that I have had (many) over the years will lay on their stomach put their butts in the air and meow. A way to tell is to touch the lower back. She will be very sensitive to your touch. If no response you may have a sick cat and needs to go to the vet. The cost to get fixed I would say ranges. Where I live it is about 30-50.

Typically, cats don't go into heat until around Spring. Something else may be going on with your cat.
