LA is like anyplace else, it has it share of good and bad:
Bad:
Traffic
Dirt/garbage/grafitti/weeds
Crime
Traffic
Bad drivers
The Homeless
A disproportionate number of smug, self-absorbed a-holes.
Really expensive housing, gas, insurance.
Did I mention the insane traffic?
The obscenely wealthy are juxtaposed against the very poor.
Good:
Weather. You can wear shorts year round and go from skiing to the beach in January.
Very diverse culture. Anybody from anywhere can find a community where s/he can feel at home.
Lots of places to shop, from the super cheap to the obscenely overpriced.
Ditto for restaurants.
Lots of things to do year round: sports, amusement parks, concerts and of course, gobs of movie theaters.
Remember, this is Hollywood, so we tend towards the tourist attractions. And sadly, the glitter has become a bit tarnished, so many tourist are sadly disappointed there are no "swimmin' pools and movie stars" on every corner.
Good rule of thumb, try to look at the sunshine, mountains, and blue skies and not down at the garbage and potholes.
And remember, when it's 120 in the shade in August, it's just the price we have to pay for not having snow.

Los Angeles is exactly like ALL of California! Everybody is a tan surfer! Yep! That's all that California is! 35 million surfers, just like Spicolli from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High!" If we're not catching the perfect awesome wave, then we're getting stoned.
Oh, that's right. Only the dudes are like that! The babes are all Malibu Barbie Valley Girls! Like, omagod!

I recently moved cause I am tired of too many people and so much traffic and the cost of living is ridiculous. But I miss it!!! I miss the food. All different kinds of cultures. People aren't so closed minded. A lot are very egotistical. But they are friendlier than any place I've ever been (and I've been to a few places.)
I like that you can be in the mountain one minute and w/in an hour you can be at the beach or the dessert. Their is always something to do if you have a broad range of interest. Great night life.

That's an extremely broad question, but here goes. The city is remarkably diverse, with multiple races and ethnicities. There is a vast chasm between rich and poor -- within blocks you'll find people in mansions with Bentleys and servants and not far away, 8 people sleeping in a room that was meant to store the garden equipment in an apartment complex. There is not much vibrant intellectual life in LA -- people tend to be materialistic and superficial. You can't beat the weather -- where else can you have your shorts and shades on in January? I came here in 1984, never having even visited California before, and expected to stay here for a year to see what it was like. Here I am, nearly 23 years later. I have a love-hate relationship with LA.
