Women back then removed their eyebrows so their foreheads look larger. It was a fashion thing. Like powdered wigs and bell bottoms were.

During the High Renaissance when the Mona Lisa was painted, women having a very high foreheads and no eyebrows were considered virtuous and beautiful, so women would pluck their eyebrows and also along the hairline to the top of the head. It's kind of like the current trend we see now with women getting Brazilian waxes. Although the eyebrow-forehead plucking was a little more obvious to the general public than the Brazilian wax..

I think Mona Lisa did not have eyebrows because in those days in Italy ladies use to shave their eyebrows in sign of mourning for a person of their family, most of the time for their husband.

It was the fashion of the time to shave the eyebrows. In a lot of dutch paintings of, I believe the 14th or 15th C. you'll find women with shaved eyebrows and the front of their hair shaved off, this is why their hairline starts way back. The also look as if they have large bellies, almost pregnant, this was also seen as attractive at the time.

Some types of illnesses, including hypothyroidism, will cause someone to lose their hair. This can first show up as thinning or a loss of the eyebrows.
So, your question applies not just to the Mona Lisa. Then again, neither the model nor Leonarda da Vinci is around to be asked about it.

Not sure if this is true but lore goes she had a white cat that would help her sit still for the sessions, but the hair would catch in her eyebrows seeing it was a long haired cat. This annoyed Leonardo so he waited to paint them in, but then decided he liked it that way better. Probably the story is completely false but I've heard it on various different programs.

Leonardo decided the picture was better without eyebrows, whether she had them or not. Did he fail ?

She did at one time have eye brows. Remember that her creator was a man and true in fact she is of a man's image and if memory serves me correct he was a little crazy as most of us Artist are. I am sure he found it necessary to remove his brows or at least hers as his were big and bushy.

because she messed up on her eyebrows while pulling them out with the little pincer and decided she would look better without eyebrows or she could actually be an alien.
