Pre-K stands for Pre-Kindergarten and it is the level at which a child is learning. Preschool tends to describe the school at which a Pre-K curriculum is taught. Most Pre-schools have programs for 3's & 4's.
A Pre-K curriculum is heavy on socialization and school-appropriate behaviors (listening to directions, listening to a story), although now most children are assumed to have also learned their letters and letter sounds and writing the letters, counting, colors, shapes, and even some sight-words before entering K - and most preschools have had to step-up their academic rigor somewhat.
Often Pre-K and Preschool are used interchangable.
