The martial arts as we know them today were first developed by Buddhist monks as an exercise regimen to keep them awake during meditation. Only later did it become an actual fighting style to defend the Shaolin temple against thieves of all sorts. So yes, the martial arts are used for enlightenment--that's the way it always should be.

I think this may depend on your definition of enlightenment. Martial Arts definatly teches not only self respect and respesct for others but also shows you your limitations and your ability to grow beyond those limitations. You learn to be aware of yourself and of your surroundings and to hone your concentration and focus. All of these things, combined with a good amount of peace of mind, help you become more aware of yourself and of how you interact with the world around you. I definatly think it is one path TOWARD enlightenment at least...
Hope this helps...

that was the basis of what Martial arts were developed for in the beginning, but as a practitioner, it can give you a better sense of yourself, which you could attribiute to enlightenment.
