I feed my 4 month old kitten 1/2 a can of food in the morning and 1/2 a can of food at night and leave dry food and water for him out all day long. Is this good enough?

It sounds good to me. You might try feeding him a food specifically formulated for kittens, if you're not. But it sounds like he's getting sufficient food and water. If you find that he's gaining too much weight, then you might have to adjust the amount accordingly.

the only I can tell is that the best food is the dry one because it is fuller in nutrients than the canned ones. try to feed it more frequently with dry food and use the cans in order to give some variety in the meals(e.g.one or two cans per week). i suppose leaving a fine quantity of proper dry food-and water of course-as you do now is OK. indeed, kittens have different needs than adult cats but in any case the cat must not become overweight as this will affect her health.
