If God is in control of everything, including my life - what does he need me for?

You have been exposed to a lie. Much of the traditional church has taught that God is Sovereign, and that He is is control over all things on planet earth. The only problem with this is, it is in complete opposition to what the Bible tells us. YES God is Sovereign in the universe. It is by His sovereignty that He created this world, and by that same sovereignty He delegated authority on this planet to mankind. Because He has delegated His authority to mankind, He has drawn a line that He will not cross without being given permission by one of us. This is the entire idea behind prayer. God cannot do anything in this earth without either someone to work with or through, or asking Him to do it through prayer. If everything that happens on earth is "God's will" then it's His will that babies are killed, and that violent crimes are happening, that wars are being fought. NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE HIS WILL. They are happening in the earth because He gave us control of the earth, and expected us to do what is right, and then we rebelled against Him. All of the crime, all of the disease, all of the death and corruption, etc. that we see in the world today happened IN SPITE of His desire, simply because we have been awful stewards of what He gave us charge of. So when will all of this disaster come to an end? I'm glad you asked. It isn't specifically spelled out in scripture, but from everything else it says it would appear as though there is a "lease" on the earth. In other words, this authority that God delegated to man has an expiration date. He was smart and put a term limit on the deal. So when the "lease" is up, God no longer has to stand on the outside looking in, waiting for someone to consent and cooperate with Him. When the term expires, He is coming in to clean everything up that doesn't belong. All of the sin, all of the ungodliness, all of the coruption and pollution. He is going to reclaim the entire earth for the Kingdom of God. So, in keeping with this same idea, God has given you your life to live. He has given you instructions in the Bible as to how He expects you to live it, but the responsibility is yours. You are in the driver's seat.

God is in control of everything, and he knows everything that you will do in the future, but you are still completely free to make your own choices. Riiiiiiight.

An omnipotent god does not need worship. Think about that.

he wants a relationship, not just a bunch of robots to control. If He made all your choices for you, you wouldn't be a human being, you'd be just a dumb animal.

God has a plan for our lives, He guides us if we listen to him. God gave us free-will to make choices.

He doesn't need you, but you need him. He wants you to choose to follow him, but you have the choice to listen and follow his lead or to go your own way.

he gave us the GIFT of LIFE, it's up to us to USE our GIFT, or CHERISH it and do the RIGHT thing, - like a new born baby, you give life to a new born baby, you run his life, it's not you are saying "what do I need this baby for"
