One of my cats also does this, it's just playing and natural instinct, maybe they think they need to drown the prey to make sure it's really dead!!

My Sugar does this. Her toys are beanie babys, the little ones. She puts them in her dry food bowl and water bowl. I then see her eat around the toy while it is still in the bowl. I would take out the ones that are in the water bowl to dry is out. She is the 1st cat I've had that does this.

Ugh, if I knew how to stop this behavior I'd be rich.
I got this mouse thing that squeaks when it's shaken. Well, one day I saw my kitten playing in the water and I couldn't figure out why, and I kept going "NO!" "Stop it!" "Get your feet out of the water dish!" "we drink it, not play with it!" "HEY! I SAID NO!"
Finally I see the kitten drag this wet, mushy, soppy thing out of the water dish. I walked over to pick it up and it was the mouse and it was squeaking uncontrollably and wouldn't stop. I had to throw it in the garbage can outside because it never stopped squeaking.
I bought a new mouse at my next trip to the grocery store and it was drowned in the same manner in less than 24 hours.

I suggest to make sure there is nothing out around the house for him to do pick up and take to his bowl.
OR - Have a Spray bottle ready with water and just spray him......he should get the point that its not good
Good luck!

I had a cat that would do that. As far as I could tell, it didn't cause any harm, he just liked to drown his "kill."
